One of the most challenging aspects of college is funding the entire experience. For the 2021-2022 school year, the average price of tuition and fees was $38,070 for private colleges, $10,740 for in-state students at public institutions and $27,560 for out-of-state students at public colleges.

Below is the most comprehensive list of college scholarships that all college students and soon to be college students should take advantage of.

Gates Scholarship

This highly selective scholarship is awarded to minority students who demonstrate outstanding academic achievement and leadership abilities. High school seniors must be eligible for the Pell Grant program and possess a minimum cumulative weighted GPA of 3.3.

Jackie Robinson Foundation Scholarship

This scholarship is awarded to minority high school seniors who demonstrate leadership potential and academic excellence. Applicants must plan on attending an approved four-year college. Recipients also receive career guidance and internship placement.

ETS Presidential Scholarship for HBCU Students

This scholarship is awarded by ETS and the Thurgood Marshall College Fund. Juniors or seniors enrolled in a historically Black college or university (HBCU) may apply. Students must demonstrate financial need and possess a minimum GPA of 3.5.

The Frederick Douglass Bicentennial Scholarship Program

This scholarship is awarded to one female and one male senior attending a HBCU. Applicants must possess a minimum GPA of 3.5 and demonstrate financial need, strong leadership skills, and a commitment to community service.

Ron Brown Scholar Program

Applicants for this scholarship must be low-income Black or African American high school seniors. This selective program looks for students who demonstrate an interest in public service, entrepreneurship, and community involvement.

American Bus Association Diversity Scholarship

This scholarship focuses on underrepresented groups pursuing careers in the transportation, travel, and tourism industries at the management or operational level. Undergraduate or graduate students may apply.

AMS Minority Scholarships

The American Meteorological Society awards this scholarship to minority students. Applicants must be starting their first year of college and intend to pursue a career in atmospheric or related oceanic and hydrologic sciences.

BLM Foundation Scholarship

Minority high school seniors who live in Illinois and hold a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher may apply for this scholarship. A copy of a college or university acceptance letter is required.

American Association of Blacks In Energy Scholarship

AABE awards 13 annual scholarships to underrepresented minority high school seniors, including African Americans. Students must pursue a major in business, technology, engineering, mathematics, or one of the physical sciences.

Congressional Black Caucus Spouses Education Scholarship

Eligible applicants include Black and African American students pursuing undergraduate or graduate degrees. High school seniors may also apply. Applicants must live or go to school in a CBC Members district.

National Black Nurses Association Scholarship Program

The NBNA offers numerous scholarships for Black and African American students pursuing a career in nursing. Students must be NBNA members currently enrolled in a nursing program.

Dr Julianne Malveaux Scholarship

Sophomore or junior African American women enrolled at an accredited university may apply. Applicants must major in journalism, economics, or a related field and possess a GPA of at least 3.0.

The Phyllis G. Meekins Scholarship

Administered by the Ladies Professional Golf Association, this scholarship is available to female high school seniors who plan on playing collegiate golf while pursuing a degree. Two of these need-based scholarships are awarded to minority students each year.

Dr Barbara Odom-Wesley Spirit Of Achievement Scholarship

Applicants must be African American female seniors attending high school in Tarrant County or Grand Prairie, Texas. Students may use this scholarship at any two- or four-year college or university.

The Wynetta Frazier Sister-To-Sister Scholarship

This scholarship is sponsored by the National Hook-Up of Black Women. African American women whose education was disrupted due to family or other obligations may apply. Applicants must be at least 21 years old and entering or returning to college.

ACS Scholars Program

The American Chemical Society awards this renewable scholarship to underrepresented students majoring in chemistry-related disciplines. Applicants must possess a GPA of 3.0 or higher and intend to pursue a career in chemistry-related science.

This scholarship is for Black and African American high school seniors who demonstrate a passion for technology and intend to pursue a bachelor's degree in engineering, computer science, computer information systems, or specific business programs.

KnowBe4 Scholarships For Black Americans in Cybersecurity

Administered by the Center for Cyber Safety and Education, the KnowBe4 scholarship is open to Black and African American students. Applicants must be pursuing a degree focused on cybersecurity or information assurance. Undergraduates or graduate students with a minimum GPA of 3.2 may apply.

Brown and Caldwell Minority Scholarship

Black, African American, and other minority students may apply. Students must be undergraduates in their junior or senior year or enrolled in a graduate program in engineering or environmental science.

Development Fund for Black Students in Science and Tech

DFBSST identifies students through the assistance of Engineering and  Science Department deans and professors at pre-selected, predominantly Black colleges and universities. DFBSST requests the deans and faculty members to identify a specified number of students that they would like to be considered for scholarships, and to pass on DFBSST scholarship application forms to these students.

Enterprise Holdings ROAD Forward Scholarship

First-year African American college students attending a United Negro College Fund-member institution may apply for this scholarship. Applicants must also be first-generation college students who can demonstrate financial need.

UNCF Scholarships

The United Negro College Fund has helped over 500,000 students earn college degrees. UNCF is the largest private scholarship provider for minority group members. Each year, they award more than $100 million in scholarships to students attending more than 1100 colleges in the United States. This includes scholarships to students attending 37 HBCUS. Boom & Bucket Scholarship

Boom & Bucket is offering a scholarship of $1,000 to be awarded each year to a student pursuing a heavy machinery themed program. This scholarship is available to both currently enrolled students and future students who are planning to attend a program within the next 12 months. The program can be at a college or a trade school anywhere in the United Sates or Canada.

Coca-Cola Scholars Program

 The Coca-Cola Scholars Program Scholarship is an achievement-based scholarship awarded to graduating high school seniors. Students are recognized for their capacity to lead and serve, as well as their commitment to making a significant impact on their schools and communities.

Senior Care Aging Matters Scholarship

The Senior Care Aging Matters Scholarship is a $1500 scholarship given annually to a college student that currently cares for an aging loved one, works within the senior community, or intends to pursue a career that will have an impact on the elderly population. Any existing student (or incoming freshman), in good academic standing, at a 2 or 4 year accredited college can apply for this scholarship. The recipient will need to demonstrate a unique and admirable understanding and desire to show us that "Aging Matters" to them.

The PixelPlex STEM Scholarship is open to current students enrolled in a STEM, economics or business field. You must submit an essay of at least 800 words on one of the following topics in order to be considered for this award: ""Blockchain: Focus on one industry or sector of your choice and describe how blockchain, in your opinion, will revolutionize it, and what existing problems will be solved within the next 3-5 years" or "Artificial Intelligence.

The $2,000 No Essay Scholarship is an easy scholarship with no essay required! The scholarship can be used to cover tuition, housing, books, or any education-related expenses. The College Scholarship is available to students enrolled at an accredited high school, college or university. You must have a minimum 2.8 GPA and submit a 500-750 word essay to qualify for this award. The essay should detail how you are driven to innovate, how you plan to influence progress on any level in any space or how you have already affected positive change with creative thinking

100 Black Men of America Annual Scholarship 

The Annual Scholarship Programs are operated at the local level through our 100 Black Men chapter network. Mentees and Collegiate 100 students have the opportunity to apply for scholarships directly through their mentors or local 100 Black Men chapter. Chapters across our network offer scholarship program opportunities to students through local Scholarship/College Fairs, Scholarship Dinners, and Scholarship Galas.

ACHE Albert W. Dent Graduate Student Scholarship

The ACHE Albert W. Dent Graduate Student Scholarship is offered to provide financial aid to minority students in healthcare management graduate programs to help offset tuition costs, student loans and expenses. Offered annually, the Albert W. Dent Graduate Student Scholarship is designated for minority students enrolled in their final year of a healthcare management graduate program.

ACS Scholars Program

ACS awards renewable scholarships to underrepresented minority students who want to enter the fields of chemistry or chemistry-related fields.African American, Hispanic, Pacific Islander (excluding Asian) or American Indian high school seniors or college freshman, sophomores, or juniors pursuing a college degree in the chemical sciences or chemical technology are eligible to apply.

Actuarial Diversity Scholarship

The Actuarial Diversity Scholarship promotes diversity within the profession through an annual scholarship program for Black/African American, Hispanic, Native North American and Pacific Islander students.

Will be a full-time undergraduate student at a U.S. accredited educational institution. Minimum GPA of 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale), emphasis on math or actuarial courses. Entering college freshmen must have a minimum ACT math score of 28 or SAT math score of 600. Actuarial exams will be an important factor in evaluating scholarship qualifications for applicants entering their junior year and beyond

African American Network of the Carolinas 

The African American Network – Carolinas chapter provides scholarships to college-bound students from North and South Carolina who are pursuing a major in engineering, math, science, computer science, accounting, finance or business administration. Applicants must be a graduating senior at a North or South Carolina high school and must attend a four-year college or university located in North or South Carolina. Applicants must plan to major in engineering, computer science, the sciences, accounting, finance or business administration.

AFSCME Union Scholars Program Summer Internship

The Union Scholars Program is a 10-week summer internship for students of color who are passionate about social justice, with an emphasis on workers' rights. Students will take part in a hands-on organizing experience with AFSCME members, and will enjoy an opportunity to travel and receive valuable, resume-building experience - all while getting paid. Applicants must be an undergraduate sophomore or junior at the time of the application and the interview process; have a minimum 2.5 GPA, be a college student of color and demonstrate an interest in working for social and economic justice through the labor union movement.

AIA/ Architects Foundation Diversity Advancement Scholarship

Architects Foundation and the American Institute of Architects created the Diversity Advancement Scholarship to help more minority students pursue a successful career in architecture. Eligible students must be a US citizen, have a minimum 3.0 GPA, and be: a high school senior; a rising second-year college student in an architecture program; or, a technical school or community college student who has completed high school or its equivalent and intends to transfer to an architecture program.

AIA Chicago Foundation Graduate Diversity Scholarship

The AIA Chicago Foundation Graduate Scholarship is a design scholarship established to increase diversity within the architectural profession by aiding an incoming or currently enrolled graduate student attending NAAB accredited master’s degree program in architecture at the Illinois Institute of Technology, School of the Art Institute of Chicago, or the University of Illinois at Chicago.

AIA Chicago Foundation Undergraduate Diversity Scholarship 

The AIA Chicago Foundation Undergraduate Diversity Scholarship is an academic scholarship established to increase diversity within the architectural profession by aiding a current undergraduate student or student transferring into the B.Arch program at the Illinois Institute of Architecture or the BS program in Architecture at the University of Illinois at Chicago. To be eligible, the applicant must: be a current undergraduate student or transfer student entering their 3rd or 4th year of an architecture program at Illinois Institute of Technology or University of Illinois at Chicago; demonstrate financial need; fulfill diversity requirements; submit a FAFSA form; and, two letters of recommendation; one letter should address your potential as an architect.

AICPA Scholarship for Minority Accounting Students 

The AICPA Minority Scholarship awards outstanding minority students to encourage their selection of accounting as a major and their ultimate entry into the profession. Applicants must be full-time minority students pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree in accounting or an accounting-related major. Applicants must have a GPA of at least a 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale), demonstrate some financial need and be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident. ALA LITA LSSI Scholarship 

The LITA/LSSI Minority Scholarship is awarded annually by the Library and Information Technology Association, a division of the American Library Association, and Library Systems and Services, Inc. The scholarship is designed to encourage the entry of qualified persons into the library and automation field who plan to follow a career in that field; who demonstrate potential in, and a strong commitment to the use of automated systems in libraries; and who are qualified members of a principal minority group (American Indian or Alaskan native, Asian or Pacific Islander, African-American, or Hispanic).

ALCOA Fund Scholarship 

The ALCOA Fund Scholarship provides support for underserved and underrepresented populations (African-American or Hispanic students) who are graduates of the Cleveland Metropolitan School District or a Catholic school in Greater Cleveland.

Alice Belkin Memorial Scholarship 

Alice Belkin Memorial Scholarships are awarded annually to outstanding minority graduate students in the field of international relations who need financial assistance. Applicants must be a minority graduate student enrolled in studies related to the field of Globalization or International Relations at UCLA, be a U.S. Citizen or permanent resident, and have a minimum 3.0 GPA.

Alma Exley Scholarship 

The Alma Exley Scholarship Program is dedicated to promoting greater diversity in the teaching profession. The program awards one scholarship annually to a person of color who is enrolled in a teacher-preparation program at a college or university in Connecticut. Those eligible include African Americans, Asian Americans, Hispanic Americans, and Native Americans.

American Association of Blacks In Energy Scholarship 

The American Association of Blacks in Energy is a professional association composed of African Americans in the energy industry.

American Library Association Spectrum Scholarship 

Applicant must be a citizen or permanent resident of the U.S. or Canada and must be American Indian/Alaska Native, Asian, Black/African American, Hispanic/Latino or Native Hawaiian/Other Pacific Islander and must attend an ALA-accredited graduate program in library and information studies or an ALA-recognized NCATE School Library Media program.

AMS Minority Scholarships

The AMS Minority Scholarships will award funding to minority students who have been traditionally underrepresented in the sciences, especially Hispanic, Native American, and Black/African American students. Funding for the scholarships is provided by donations made by members to the AMS Giving Program.

Anarcha, Betsy, Lucy, Memorial, Scholarship Award

The Anarcha, Betsy, and Lucy Memorial Scholarship Award is given in honor of three enslaved women who, as subjects of experimentation, helped shape advances in clinical and surgical knowledge and are recognized today as the Mothers of Gynecology.

Annual Sphinx Competition 

The Sphinx Competition is a national competition offering young Black and Latinix classical string players a chance to compete under the guidance of an internationally renowned panel of judges, and to perform with and receive mentorship from established professional musicians.

APA Foundation Scholarship 

The APA Foundation Scholarship was created to advance social equity and diversity in the planning profession and in our communities. Applicants from any minority group are eligible to apply. Applicants must be currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate Planning Accreditation Board approved program and demonstrate financial need.

APA Judith McManus Price Scholarship

The Minority Fellows Program (MFP) is a fellowship competition for individuals from underrepresented backgrounds applying to or in the early stages of doctoral programs in political science. The BLM² Scholarship was founded on the belief that any motivated individual in need should have the opportunity to further his or her education. Brown and Caldwell offers a $5,000 Minority Scholarship to support students who identify as minorities and are interested in pursuing a career in the environmental profession. CGCS-Bernard Harris Scholarship Program 

The CGCS-Bernard Harris Scholarship Program was established to encourage minority students to pursue college degrees and careers in science, technology, engineering, and math. Cornerstone Charitable Scholarship Trust targets disadvantaged high school and post high school graduates across the State of Arkansas, under age 25 and eligible applicants with funding resulting from the Mauldin vs. Arkansas State Hospital Consent Decree, United States District Court No. LR-C-8777. To be eligible to apply, applicants must be economically disadvantaged, have completed their high school diploma at the time of application, plan to attend an accredited university, college, vocational school and be enrolled in or accepted as a student at an accredited university, college, or vocational school.

The Corris Boyd Scholars Program is a $40,000 award offered to graduate students majoring in healthcare administration. To qualify for the scholarship, the recipient needs to be a student of African American descent who resides in Philadelphia County at the time of application and must have a scholastic average of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale. The SAA Historically Underrepresented Groups Scholarship (HUGS) helps increase the number of under-represented minorities obtaining degrees in archaeology. The Kearns Louis-Jean Memorial Scholarship is awarded to students of color within Boston, and neighboring cities/town, who are entering their first year of college, and pursuing a degree within STEM.
