Upper School Athletics Tutorial Form

As is stated in the requirements for graduation, students must complete 6 credits (2 courses/sports) of physical education in both the 9th and 10th grade years. In both the 11th and 12th grades, students must complete 3 credits (1 course/sport) of physical education each year. These credits may be earned through physical education courses or through participation on any Greenhill Interscholastic Athletics Team. However, a student may request to substitute an advanced level outside activity/sport in lieu of participating in PE or Athletics for the requested term if the activity/sport meets the following criteria:

Prerequisite: Foundations of Lifetime Fitness
  • Starting with the class of 2025: Students applying for an athletics tutorial must complete Foundations of Lifetime Fitness prior to being eligible for an athletics tutorial. Our goal with this class is to provide our upper school students with the knowledge and skills necessary to develop a lifelong balanced approach to fitness and wellness.
  • Foundations of Lifetime Fitness is a scheduled class during the school day that will not in any way interfere with the after-school activities of the student. The course has a classroom portion and an activity lab portion.
  • Once completing the foundations course, students will be eligible to receive athletics tutorial for the remainder of their PE credits as long as they continue to meet the tutorial criteria.
Compete consistently in an advanced level activity/sport.
  • The student must verify that they compete at the highest level available within their age group.
  • The student must have rankings and recent results to help support their level of play.
  • Activities/sports which Greenhill does not participate in are given high consideration for approval.
  • Team sports which Greenhill offers are typically not activities which qualify for a tutorial.
  • The activity or sport may not substitute for a similar program offered by the school during that same term/season.
  • Students granted a tutorial in a sport which Greenhill offers must agree to fulfill their second physical education requirement as a member of the Greenhill team in the same sport.
  • Please contact Stacey Johnson, PE Department Chair, for clarification of what equates to an advanced level in your chosen activity/sport.
The hours commitment must be comparable to that of an interscholastic sports team.
  • Typical Greenhill sports teams have hours commitments of 10+ hours a week.
  • Hours that count towards the tutorial can include: practices, private lessons, competitions, and sports performance training. Time spent training on you own and travel time are not considered as a part of the hours commitment for an athletics tutorial.
  • Students must submit a comprehensive weekly training schedule.
  • Students must compete regularly within a trimester and must submit a competition schedule.
  • Students must keep a online log (setup by the PE Department) of all practices and competition. This log will be reviewed at the end of the term as verification of a student’s hours commitment.
  • Any major changes to the student’s tutorial schedule that occur during the term will need to be approved by the PE Department Chair to ensure the tutorial still meets all the appropriate standards.
