Minimum Qualifications

The News Producer works in a team environment with a small full-time and part-time professional staff as well as student staff for the Red River Radio public radio network which serves North and Central Louisiana, East Texas and South Arkansas. We have a positive, enthusiastic work environment, within an excellent university community.   This position will be the on-air newscaster during NPR’s “Morning Edition” while updating the news website and reporting on news stories throughout the day. The Morning Edition Producer/Newscaster is in charge of: anchoring and producing live newscasts during “Morning Edition” on Red River Radio; and researching, writing, producing and editing in-depth stories for radio and online. Additionally, this position participates in pitching original ideas that can be featured in daily newscasts, in-feature segments, special broadcast segments and online; and serving as liaison to the national NPR news operation. Requires tracking of stories and features produced for listing in public files.   Participation in Red River Radio’s fund drive is required, including hosting and other tasks.   Other duties as assigned.   This position is considered high-priority and the news director is on-call and is required to work irregular hours as circumstances dictate.

Job Requirements 

REQUIRED:  Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) in journalism, telecommunications, or related field and two years of experience in public broadcasting or a journalism-related broadcasting environment. Possess a valid driver’s license with the ability to be added as an approved driver. In-depth understanding of journalistic principles, particularly as they apply to public media; hands-on experience in writing, reporting, editing, production, and on-air delivery for both radio and social media and ability to work with news interns when they are available. Ability and judgment to produce a large quantity of work to deadline that matches the quality of NPR productions; and experience working with multi-platform technologies and the ability to adapt material to a variety of platforms. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, written and verbal, including a customer service orientation and ability to interact with a wide variety of individuals including station volunteers and advisory board members. Strong organizational and multitasking skills including ability to manage multiple priorities within a fast-paced environment. 


Position requires ability to travel to meet deadline requirements. Physical requirements of this position require the ability to view, hear, speak; sit at a computer for extended amounts of time; and handle audio recording equipment
