These internship positions will provide you an opportunity work alongside airport professionals in a fast-moving, dynamic environment helping to break down barriers for Equity and Social Justice in your own community and shape this “city within a city” for decades to come.
  
KCIA is recruiting for three (3) undergraduate-level interns in a variety of fields. See below for details on each position.

Airfield Operations & Business Relations Intern 
 Location: Airport Terminal Building 
The responsibilities of the Airfield Operations & Business Relations Intern include performing entry-level airfield oversight and General Aviation duties with the operations & external relations team. Specific operational tasks may include inspections, assisting tenants, administrative duties and record keeping, tenant notifications, and ongoing education through IET online courses covering part 139 and part 77 subject matter. The internship will help the student apply their academic skills to gain firsthand knowledge of Airport General Aviation, Construction, Tenant & Community Relations, and Airfield Operations.
 
 Job Duties
  • Review and understanding of the BFI Airport Certification Manual
    • Includes Airport Emergency Program - AEP
  • Assisting with General Aviation hangar/tie down waitlists
  • Responding to customer and community inquiries
  • Developing standard communication templates
  • Utilizing proper and required communications via air to ground radio with FAA ATCT
  • Responding to airfield emergencies with operations
  • Assisting with daily Part 139 airfield inspections
  • Wildlife management and mitigation
  • Project Safety and construction oversight
  • Understanding Part 77 surfaces
  • Assisting airfield tenants as necessary
  • Terminal Airside (and Landside when necessary) oversight
  • Daily terminal ramp FOD inspections prior to and during peak flight activity
  • Assist with Noise complaint data
  • Airfield flight operations data reporting
Experience, Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills
  • Basic familiarity of aviation and/or airports
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and/or written policies, procedures, and instructions
  • Skill in using computer software such as word processing and spreadsheets

CAD & GIS Intern
Location: Teleworking and occasionally onsite at the Airport Terminal Building as necessary  
The responsibilities of the CAD & GIS Applications Intern include performing entry-level engineering technical services with direction and guidance from the Innovation Analyst as Lead reporting to the Innovation Section Manager. Specific engineering tasks may include GIS data editing, digitizing, map creation, drafting drawings from notes and sketches, taking field measurements, and assisting with engineering records management. The internship will help the student apply their academic skills to gain firsthand knowledge of airport layout and operations.  

 Job Duties
  • Provide basic graphic, drafting and mapping support including field measurements and sketching 
  • Draft engineering drawings from notes and sketches using manual or Computer Aided Design (CAD) systems; update and revise existing drawings 
  • Using ArcGIS Pro/ArcMap to digitize and edit spatial data 
  • Create basic site plans or aerial maps from scratch based on customer requests 
  • Print aerial maps on large plotter for meetings and office use 
  • Incorporate markups into drawings under the direction of lead or supervisor 
  • Perform basic research of hardware and equipment and basic mathematical calculations 
  • Maintain drawing filing supplies and records; prepare drawing sets for internal and external distribution 
  • Assist in organizing and verifying consultant/contractors project documents 
  • Verify and compile the necessary documentation for engineering requests 
  • Gather data for engineering and related projects; analyze data and base map drawings as assigned 
  • Research King County International Airport/Boeing Field projects to assemble for Archives and Engineering Records to organize as assigned 
  • Perform limited or basic engineering calculations 
  • Perform general office support and maintain records for assigned work unit 
  • Respond to inquiries from airport staff and consultants regarding work 
  • GIS data collection, field work, and/or projects 
  • Airport applications data collection, QA/QC, and/or reporting 
Experience, Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills
  • Enrolled or experienced in AutoCAD, Civil3D, Revit, and GIS applications 
  • Basic familiarity of aviation and engineering functions 
  • Knowledge of basic drafting techniques and principles 
  • Skill in using software such as AutoCAD & GIS applications measuring and determining distances 
  • Experience using ESRI’s ArcPro and ArcMap applications  
  • Familiarity or experience plotting/printing map documents  
  • Familiarity or experience using ArcGIS online for mapping and data manipulation 
  • Competence in Microsoft Office programs including Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, PowerBI and SharePoint 
  • Familiarity with map types, google earth imagery and street addresses 
  • Graphical detail-oriented skills and good oral and written communications skills 
  • Passionate and willing to work in a team environment 
General Engineering Intern
Location: Teleworking and occasionally onsite at the Airport Terminal Building as necessary 
The responsibilities of the General Engineering Intern include assisting with and leading aspects of KCIA’s Capital Improvement Program (CIP), developing FAA regulatory documentation, assist with construction activities, and update our CAD database and models.  The chosen candidate will work on highly visible public projects and assist with achieving major agency goals. These projects could range from Runway Rehabilitations to Carbon Neutral efforts.   This position will have the opportunity for paid professional development opportunities & trainings, access to public management mentors from within the County and cross-sectional work within the division.
 
Job Duties
  • Assist with obtaining Carbon Neutral accreditation through the Airports Council International (ACI), this includes coordinating with international entities and companies, performing inventories and developing and maintaining a continuous project programs. 
  • Assist in maintaining construction and contract documentation for the 14L/32R Runway Rehabilitation and Taxiway A4-B3 Reconfiguration, and A11 Reconstruction Projects and other tenant projects.  
  • Assist with the development of the Asset Management database and project implementation. 
  • Assist supervisor in developing, modifying, and maintaining work order contracts, Architecture and Engineering contracts, and other contracts as needed. 
  • Assist supervisor in reviewing plans, specifications and estimates prepared by consultant team. 
  • Assist with analysis of the FAA regulatory surfaces and verify determinations. 
  • Assist in engineering documents review – Review investigation work plans, health and safety plans, sampling plans, and policies. 
  • Compile existing documents and SOPs for standard work. 
  • Participate in design review meetings. 
  • Assist in maintaining construction and contract documentation.  
  • KCIA Strategic Climate Action Plan (SCAP) program assistance 
Experience, Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills
  • Enrolled as a college student with prior engineering coursework from an accredited institution. 
  • Experience in AutoCAD Civil 3d, and Revit 
  • Knowledge of XP SWMM, AutoCAD Storm and Sanitary Analysis, and GIS 
  • Competence in Microsoft Office programs including Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.  
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including maturity, an ability to work unrepentantly and in a team setting. 
  • Proactive, motivated, self-directed learner with good problem-solving skills. 
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to meet deadlines. 
  • Able to juggle multiple projects at a time in a fast-paced environment. 
  • Self-starter with ability to work effectively in a team environment. 
  • Good time management skills in order to support co-workers and project work. 
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills. 
  • Skill in working effectively and cooperatively with internal and external customers with a variety of individuals from diverse backgrounds.

Who May Apply: This recruiting effort is for current college students (returning for the 2024-2025 academic year) from an accredited two- or four-year institution.
 
Work Schedule: This is a 40 hour per week position for the summer normally working Monday through Friday, 8 – 5 p.m. and 15-20 hours per week during the school year. There may be rare times when after-hours, weekends and/or holidays are required. This position is non-exempt from the Fair Labor Standards Act and is overtime eligible.
