This was a heart wrenching story about the sudden loss of a first true love, healing and starting over.

There were a lot of people there to help Cole Harkin, along his healing journey. The person put in the roll of directly caring for his newborn daughter Layla, while he was on the road touring with his band, held a significance he found comfort in and was thankful for. Through the years he also found himself tempted by her. His grief still too raw and unsettled though, he wouldn’t allow himself to act on his attraction that he tried to deny himself. Fate and circumstance had a way of intervening in the push and pull between he, and Harper.

Layla gave this story that little extra something, loved her adorably precocious character!

The last part of the book was my favorite! The ending brought this story together in the best way, and took me through an experience I don’t think I’ve ever came across in a book before! Loved it!

4,5 stelline

First time there will not be any rating although I finished this book (my previous books without rating were dnf, that's why no rating there).

I did like the cover! And it's the only thing I liked about this book. The author's writing style wasn't bad, but the story lacked characters development.
Till almost 30% of this book we see a grieving man, broken man. He lost his wife and he was devastated. He said he was faithful to her, but suddenly 6 years later we know that while on road he had his wild share of ONS. And still loving his dead wife.
His nanny was just pathetic, she was jumping him while he pushed her away, but she was jumping again and again... Woman, where is your pride? While he was out with his friends she acted like jealous wife, while she was just a hired help...
All the time through the there are his late wife and his current love...
Some situations felt a bit false, not realistic. After his daughter was born he was alcoholic for months!! While he was super rich and had a lot of people helping him, if not his money, how could he take care of his newborn??
First time they hooked up, he said"thanks God we didn't fuck!" (They did have both oral sex. He gave her pleasure with his mouth, while thinking that he did it only for special women!! I'm asking how many special women were in his life?? Because his wife was dead to cancer of uterus! Maybe he was with his skilled mouth a reason for it!! )) And he said that while he had sex always with condom before his wife she had 3 long term boyfriends with whom she didn't use preservatives! Like maybe it was her bad....
Not safe read: sex with OP, women touching him, emotional cheating...
Triggers: dead wife to cancer, long grief (almost all book), affair with nanny, child almost watch them have sex, unexpected pregnancy (whats new here??!!!), hero wasnt happy about heroine getting pregnant... Are you for real, man??!!! child was born at home (descriptive!!!, i dont need 20 pages about childbirth at home!!!)...

I'm a bit embarrassed to admit, this is the first book I've read by KL Shandwick. Now that I know what I'm missing, I want to delve into her backlist and read every word. Another Life is a beautifully constructed story of Cole Harkin trying to rebuild his life when fate deals him the best thing in his life and the cruelest blow at the same time.
The singing heartthrob had totally altered his life when he was blindsided by love. He and Grace had planned out their future until fate reared its ugly head and Cole is faced with a life he found hard to deal with. Without even noticing, fate mapped yet another road for the man and those he considers family. He's carefully orchestrated his new existence around his daughter, Layla, but can he follow his heart or will his overthinking head keep him from moving forward? Can he lay his past life to rest and grab onto the new life he is offered?
Ms. Shandwick's writing pulls the reader into Cole's world and his total devastation at the loss of his carefully planned life. His loss is profound and his coping mechanism is alcohol. The author touches on some very intense subjects: loss of a loved one, grief, alcohol abuse, balancing work and family, and moving on after a tragedy. The way the author delves into Cole's pain and shares it with the reader will bring tears to the most hard-hearted reader. The book is well-paced and the characters so realistic you want to crawl into the book and shake some sense into Cole and his friends and family. While Cole is the main character, his daughter, Layla steals the scenes she is in and gives the reader a small reprieve from the heartache. From a true rock star to a rock star dad, Cole is the whole package and his journey is a rewarding read for those who love character driven books and a well-deserved HEA.

Wow! Deep breath in, I really don’t feel my words can begin to do justice to this book let alone express just how good it is.
The depth of emotions throughout is so raw and real, the grief side of this I’ve felt myself, the loss and feeling like you walking under water or in a fog just completely consumed by the pain and not knowing how to get past it or start to feel anything else. For some it may be an easier thing to deal with or deal in a different way but for me this book mirrored so trully how I felt when I lost my mum at the tender age of 11, Ok in this a different scenario but the powerful emotions are the same.
This story is heartbreaking, be prepared with tissues because honestly you need them for pretty much the whole book though not just for the grief. It is also inspirational because as you come through the devastation and start to claw back some semblance of living it shows hope, there is a reason to start going forward and things to look forward to and enjoy. The baby Layla is such a cutie and despite her start in life and how sad that was she comes to be an amazing child, grown far beyond the actual years age she is. Harper is special, very empathetic and understanding, definitely someone you would want taking care of your child. For Cole, I saw my dad in some ways, dealing or not dealing with the pain of loss, the focus not really on things he should be doing but on just trying to lose himself in oblivion. The inspiration comes as gradually life forces its way back into focus, feelings both good and bad need to be dealt with and fear as well. This author has written a story that is real, it is down to earth gut wrenching and powerful. I have had the pleasure of reading a lot of books that are good, great and fantastic, books that have affected me and made me emotional including another by this very author, but this book is by far the best I have ever read. This story is one of those you wont forget for a while, it will stay with you. It is a story I wont forget, one I want to get in print as well as e_book and one I definitely want signed by the author, it is that special. Her experiences in an earlier career also play a part in the story, I found that also added to the realistic feel to the whole experience of reading it. I just cant convey enough how astoundingly amazing this story is, you need to read it yourself to completely understand what I mean. I am drained and uplifted at the same time, not sure how I am going to start another book because I feel lost that I finished this one, I almost feel I need to go back and read it again but I think I might save it for a time when I need to remember how it feels to read that one book so exceptional it is on a par all of its own.
I am drained and uplifted at the same time, not sure how I am going to start another book because I feel lost that I finished this one.

Another Life by K.L. Shandwick is a full length, standalone novel.
Cole Harkin has everything he ever dreamed of. He's on top of his world when everything comes crashing down on him. He has to rebuild his whole life. He becomes a bit broken, a bit bitter, angry and a bit cynic.
Harper starts working for him, no spoilers here. And their relationship is a complicated one. They have ups and a lot of downs. Harper is my kind of heroine, she's got the patience of a saint.
Another Life is a beautiful second chance story that gave me all the feels.
It's an emotional read and had me in knots at some point.
I liked the story, the writing and the characters and give 4,5 stars.

Wow, What a story!!
I cannot put into words just how much love I have for this book. Another Life tore me to absolute shreds but also built me back up again, my emotions were all over the place both happy and sad.

KL Shandwick has put her heart and soul into this book and into putting Cole's feelings into these beautiful words to bring his story to life.

If you haven't read anything from KL Shandwick before then you are definitely missing out. This is a must read for everyone in my opinion and it gets a fabulous 5 stars I only wish I could give it more!

“Please tell me this isn’t true,” I begged.

We had some amazing feedback about Another Life, and as K L Shandwick is a new to us author, we couldn’t wait to dive in. Single Dad, rock star and said to be heartbreakingly moving, everything we were in the mood for.

Another Life started out just wonderful yet breaking our hearts. There’s no doubt we were welling up in the first 20% as Cole Harkins world fell apart. As the front man for the band SinaMen, married to Grace, his soulmate and expecting their first child, Cole had everything he could ask for until what should have been the most wonderful experience of his and Grace’s life, turned into one of the most tragic moments, when Grace passed away only days after giving birth to their daughter, Layla. We were gripped immediately, and desperate to know how Cole faired after such a tragedy.

‘We were robbed of what so many couples took for granted; to watch each other change with the passing years, to raise a family, and to grow old together.’

‘Nothing could ever have prepared me for what happened to Grace.’

The story then skips forward 4 years and we find a withdrawn and bitter man has taken up residence in Cole. Thinking it best to continue to tour, to acclimatise his daughter to how life is going to be, Cole is absent a lot of the time, seeking refuge in women, but never giving his heart. Thankfully though, Cole has an epiphany and decides to head home and get to know the daughter Grace and him so desperately wanted.

“Sometimes, just loving someone isn’t enough; it’s how you act that’s important.”

Drowning in responsibility, he depends on Layla’s long time young nanny, Harper to help navigate the minefield of being a single Dad, though it soon becomes apparent there is a chemistry between Cole and Harper, despite Cole being wracked with grief and he repeatedly rejects Harper.

“If you’re trying to hurt me, Cole, believe me, it’s working…”

So, this is where the story took a turn for us. We sadly didn’t connect to Harper at all, her character felt cold and we just couldn’t warm to her. Also, Cole didn’t come across as a mature rock star really, he felt adolescent in his actions and speech, and whilst we empathised with his loss, six years later he was still using it as an excuse to behave appallingly, to his staff and to Harper. We just didn’t buy it and felt it hard to reconcile his character as well as Harper’s. This gutted us as we absolutely loved the first thirty percent or so of this story. The one shining light was Layla. This little girl was written to perfection. She was sweet, inquisitive and as cute as a button and constantly had us smiling from ear to ear. Her relationship with Cole was beautiful and we loved this part of the story.

‘I loved the very bones of my daughter but hadn’t shown her as much love as a father should have.’

We never really felt that important connection between Harper and Cole, and there were some aspects about Harper that felt preachy and Cole made us feel a tad uncomfortable at times. We’re devastated that Another Life didn’t work for us as it had all the elements we normally crave and devour. Perhaps it’s a mood thing, because others have loved this story, so this is one you will really need to check out for yourself and see how you get on.

A journey of love, loss, grief and finding happiness again.

From the very beginning of this book you are caught up in the loss and heartbreaking moments, there is a slow journey to Cole finding himself again after the loss of his wife Grace and a majority of the story is about Cole dealing with his grief that spanned over six years.

Cole is a rock star who has everything, money, fame, a baby on the way and the love of his life by his side until the big C rips it all away. The fame and money and status remains the same but following Grace's death Cole is also left to parent a little girl who will never know her mother and he also loses a part of himself that he can never get back. Cole hits rock bottom.

Harper is a nanny employed to look after Cole's little girl from birth, she becomes part of the family and loves Cole's daughter, she is a warm and outspoken person and a perfect fit.

After three years things begin to change with Harper and Cole, Cole begins to see Harper as more than his daughter's nanny but never acts on his feelings through thoughts of guilt and he still misses his first love Grace.

Harper is the one to act on her feelings for Cole, the one who does the pushing for more from Cole and gets rejected more than once.

I felt for Harper, I felt for Cole too but it was frustrating how long it took Cole to finally allow someone else in and open his eyes to a future instead of living in the past.

The push and pull felt real, their circumstance felt real and I thought the author put across the inner turmoils of Cole's thoughts and feelings well, at some points though I would have liked Harper's pov, the whole book was told in first person, Cole's pov and I just didn't feel connected to Harper, she was just a character in Cole's story and I do prefer more angst in my reads but this is definitely a beautiful story..

If you love slow-burn, the feeling you finally get from that hallelujah moment, love being absorbed in another person's journey, then this is a book for you, definitely a Sunday kind of read.

ANOTHER LIFE is a bitter-sweet journey, a thought provoking read with a happy ending.

I have to say that when I saw the cover of Another Life I thought it was incredible. They say 'never judge a book by it's cover' but in this instance I'd say you can. This incredible cover encases an incredible story that will blow you away and have you feeling all emotions. I would have read the whole book in one sitting if time allowed. This story is heartbreakingly beautiful and a definite must read.

This review is actually a tough one to write. Not because I don't have anything to say about this book, in fact there is so much that I want to tell you but I don't want to spoil anything for you. So much of what I am feeling is due to the story line and the after effects of certain events. I am not a stranger to reading books written by KL Shandwick and if like me you've also read her books, you already know she writes stories packed full of emotion. This book is no different, so have some tissues to hand because you will need them!

Cole Harkin has stolen my heart. I fell for the character almost immediately. When we first meet him he is a rock star sitting on top of the world with everything to look forward to. I found him to be so down to earth and with such a fabulous personality that I couldn't help but be drawn to him. The path that he thought he was travelling along suddenly changes and oh my word the author had me feeling every single emotion. How Cole deals with these changes will have you feeling all the sadness, anger and hurt alongside him. I always hoped that during his time of darkness that he would eventually find the light. His struggle to move on is real and heartfelt but all good people deserve happiness, and that is what I wished for him.

Cole could not have a better support network by means of his family and friends. I adore all the characters that we encounter in this book. You will meet Harper who plays a significant role in his life. She is an inspirational lady and someone who puts others before herself..... a trait I truly admire. Another amazing character in the book is Layla, and I know you will love her as much as I do.

What I found that the author did so well was to show how differently people can react and recover from life changing situations. I've mentioned about the emotions surrounding Cole going through darker times, but you will smile often too. From the very first chapter you will find yourself on an emotional roller coaster and it is one ride you really must not miss.

The first word which came to mind when I read Another Life was impassioned. It is so full of intense emotions that at times it took my breath away. This is a slow burn, and there's a definite feel of one step forward, two steps back as Cole tries to come to terms with a whole new and unexpected life.

These characters are by no means perfect and there were times when I wanted to shake Cole for the decisions he made and they way he reacted. However, the choices he made, although they didn’t come easy, were genuine and his vulnerability was real and raw. His anguish made for difficult reading at times and tissues were certainly needed. His daughter Layla is a sweetheart. A gorgeous little scene stealer, her innocent remarks had me in fits. Feisty and determined, I thought her character was written perfectly.

There was a warmth to Harper that just drew me to her. She’s strong, the glue that holds everyone together when all they want to do is fall apart. Her humour had me chuckling and was a welcome distraction at times. I can honestly say I loved everything about her. She’s wonderfully caring, a selfless young woman who attempts to heal this tortured man with determination and kindness. Their story takes time to unfold and it's great to see them both grow and develop over the course of the book. Beautifully written, you feel everything these two are going through and are there wanting to cheer them on.

Another Life is not only heartbreaking and emotional but it’s also heartwarming. Filled with love, strength and hope for the future. A promise that there is light at the end of the tunnel.

POV ~> First-person, Cole’s perspective.

A tattooed man stands before a dark background, carefully holding a newborn. I actually love the overall composition and title font. The author font is small and weak, though (imho). Synopsis hinted at an emotional story.

Grief does not follow one set, prescribed timeline.
Cole Harkin experienced a soul-shattering grief along with, what was meant to be, one of the most joyous days a parent can anticipate. He became withdrawn and a shell of the man he once was. He lived in darkness and if not for Layla, he may have given up on living altogether.
Harper was brought into the Harkin house by Cole’s mother, knowing that Cole was not in a place to care for a newborn child. She saw the worst of him but never judged. She raised Layla with love and stability.
This is a romance but it is more about Cole’s journey through grief, despair, and self-destruction. It’s a VERY slow burn that takes over ½ decade (and half the length of the book) before feelings are really even acknowledged. Harper deserves sainthood for her patience, understanding, and forgiveness.
Some of the secondary characters were present and supportive, but too many stayed away… very little show of support from the band outside of when Cole went to them… not the way I’d think bandmates would be after that long together.
Dialogue and interactions were sometimes repetitive in nature, Cole was a one-man merry-go-round of emotions and I’m really not sure how Harper managed to endure the ride.
The plot moved along slowly but smoothly with plenty angst and drama. Predictability was on par with the plot. The conclusion is solid, providing a strong HEA.

Per me è NI.

Not sure what I can say about this Rock Star bad boy, Cole. He has gone through so much is this book, very emotional, heartbreaking and so much more. The love of his life Grace was having his baby and he honestly thought he had his HEA. This book is how he stumbled in life after every thing crashed down on him, I loved that this book was all about Cole and how he overcame so much and was able to see that life is worth living for. I hope we get to see more of Cole in future books ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

You'll feel every emotion reading this. It will leave you saddened, furious, frustrated, happy and calm. Yes, all of that. It's a very thoughtful story, touching on parts of life that no one wants to have to face, but sometimes do. Very cleverly crafted, believable characters, K L has hit the spot again.

5 star review of Another Life by K.L. Shandwick

OMG where do I begin? I fell in love with this cover and when I read the blurb I knew that this was going to be an amazing read. Just how much it would impact on me I had no idea.

Another Life has taken me on a journey that I haven’t recovered from as yet; this was one heck of an emotional roller coaster of a read.

Cole Harkin is a shattered man, the best time of his life is also the worst time of his life. His grief is overwhelming, the devastation, pain and anguish palpable. He spirals out of control using alcohol to escape.

This book resonated with me to the bottom of my soul, perhaps because both my parents died before I was 13. I freely admit I sobbed my heart out throughout this book, not only with sorrow but also with joy.

The relationship between Cole and Layla is so special. It was wonderful to see Cole slowly come back to life and I think Harper was the right person for him to finally move forward with. I loved them together and never have I cheered so much for a couple to get a happily ever after.

Another Life is beautifully written, the writing strong and realistic and I was completely captivated by the story that KL Shandwick wove.

This book is one of the best I have read and will stay with me for a long time.

One click this book, I don’t think you will be disappointed.

Wow
KL Shandwick absolutely blew me away with this story. My heart will never be the same. “Warning “ you will need a lot of tissues while reading this book, my emotions were running all over the place I had to stop a few times while reading .... and not because I didn’t like the story but because it grabbed me so hard.

KL’s writing is superb I think this is my favorite of her books, my heart was gutted but also put back together again.

Cole is a famous Rock Star, he’s on top of the world but then his world comes crashing down. KL what can I say other than the fact your writing is absolutely brilliant, your words take up such meaning whereas I felt as if I were actual living alongside the characters in this story.

I cannot recommend this book enough. My review is vague but that is because I’m not giving anything away, I will not take away from this magnificent story.

I was fortunate enough to read this book as it was being written. I was wrecked with angst and then lifted with happiness. This is an amazing story that is so well written I'm actually jealous that you get to read it for the first time, I wish I could again. It's no secret that I am a friend of this author but I also believe in not blowing smoke up her ass and being honest. I can honestly tell you that you will love this book. If you are new to KL Shandwick, she has a knack of telling a story that hooks you, captures your breath and your heart, lets you out a little before reeling you back in. A firm five stars from me.

This book stole my heart, squeezed it and left me to pick up the pieces. What an amazing story. Cole had his life planned but life isn't always what you want and expect, his life changed dramatically to the point I even thought he didn't want to go on. Harper came into his life by his mother to help him out. This story is just heart wrenching and amazing at the same time. Read this book when you are in the right mind to get yourself on an emotional rollercoaster, in the end everything would've been worth.

I’m not one who ( excuse the pun) judges a book by its cover, but the gorgeous cover of Another Life is as beautiful as the story inside the covers.
If you’ve read KL Shandwick before you know she writes with a detail that grabs you , draws you in , takes you on an amazing journey and leaves you at the end with a warm hug.
It’s taken me a while to put my review together for Another Life , but this story will stay with You for a long while. Some parts are tissue required, some parts make you happy and some parts filled with angst. But isn’t that what we all want from a great book?
No spoilers from me, but I insist that you enjoy the ride that Cole, Harper & Grace will take you - go on , you won’t regret it!
