COVID-19 in ICE Jails & Prisons

In early April, Freedom for Immigrants launched our COVID-19 Detention Hotline for advocates and loved ones to report instances of abuse in ICE jails and prisons.

Through the hotline and letters from people in detention, we are documenting, categorizing, and verifying to the extent possible human and civil rights abuses in immigrant prisons and jails across the country on a daily basis. Some of the information collected is publicly available on our interactive map on U.S. immigration detention.

Policy Advocacy

Through extensively tracking ICE’s failed response to the COVID-19 pandemic, Freedom for Immigrants is able to help push for policy reforms.

Lawsuits & Civil Rights Complaints

Our efforts to track ICE’s inadequate and dangerous response to COVID-19 also has helped us support lawsuits and file civil rights complaints.

Freedom for Immigrants has long advocated for community-based services as part of our vision for a world without detention.

Now more than ever, we continue to organize with people in immigration detention, their families, and volunteers to support the safe release of people through our Bond Fund & Sponsorship programs.

Freedom for Immigrant’s co-founder & co-executive director Christina Fialho speaks with Buzzfeed’s Pero Like about how the COVID-19 Detention Map is helping us hold ICE accountable.
