Recently, Kenyans were treated to a gory facebook video of a lady Judy Wambui crying for help at Kiambu hospital. Judy had been referred from Athi River to come for maternity services in Kiambu Hospital only to be neglected from morning to evening. In the same video, a lady who had come to her defense could be heard painfully complaining how she too was neglected at the same hospital and since then, she has not been able to give birth to another child!!! 

This video comes in the wake of the rise of expectant patients complaining of increased cases of harassment and abuse by the health workers at Kiambu hospital. This institution has been marred with controversy in the recent past, with congestion of patients in the wards, and infant deaths.   

Expectant patients have in many cases reported to have experienced different forms of mistreatment from the health workers ranging from verbal and  physical abuse, neglect, discrimination, abandonment, poor rapport and general failure of the health system to uphold professional standards.

The Kiambu County CECM Health Dr Elies Maina and the Medical Superintendent of Kiambu Hospital committed to launching an investigation of whether there was any negligence by the hospital staff during the trending case of Judith Wambui. It is essential and within the rights of every expectant mothers as is of every citizen to have access to the highest standard of care, ensuring safe deliveries for their unborn babies and Kiambu residence are no exception. 

With overwhelming evidence indicating that access to facility-based deliveries and skilled birth attendance directly impacts the number of maternal deaths and considering that Maternal and newborn deaths are a major public health problem in Kenya not to mention the compication that arises from the mishandling of the expectant mothers. The county government of Kiambu should be able to take urgent action to address this matter 

This petition therefore urgently calls for:

1. The Kiambu Governor HE Hon. Kimani Wamatangi to make public the findings of the investigation of the Judy Wambui’s case
2. Update the people of Kiambu on the steps that has been take  or to be taken to ensure that such an incident never happens again

Every person has a right to reproductive health care which includes the right of access to appropriate health-care services that will enable parents to go safely through pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum period, and provide parents with the best chance of having a healthy infant; access to treatment by a trained health professional for conditions occurring during pregnancy including abnormal pregnancy conditions, such as ectopic, abdominal and molar pregnancy, or any medical condition exacerbated by the pregnancy to such an extent that the life or health of the mother is threatened. All such cases shall be regarded as comprising notifiable conditions.
