Why this petition matters

Started by Harriet Afandi

I am Harriet Afandi, a passionate advocate for women's and children's rights, driven by a personal experience of obstetric violence (OBV) affecting my sister who underwent an emergency CS 11 days after the due date because her clinical nurses told her "her days were not yet". This experience almost made us lose both my sister and the baby.

In Kenya, OBV remains a grave concern, jeopardizing the well-being of expectant mothers. The proposed OBV legislation in our parliament promises hope, aiming to safeguard pregnant women from negligence and abuse during childbirth. However, this vital bill faces unwarranted delays.

The bill, presented by Gathoni Wamuchomba, is a comprehensive framework to protect expectant mothers from mistreatment during pregnancy, labor, and post-childbirth.

Key decision-makers include members of the Kenyan Parliament, especially the Committee on Health, and relevant government ministries.

However, this life-saving legislation is being delayed in parliament while countless mothers continue suffering every day. We need your support now more than ever - let us urge our lawmakers to fast-track this critical bill into law without further delay.

Members of Parliament must prioritize reviewing and passing the OBV bill, ensuring its effectiveness. Ministries like Health, Gender, and Public Service should provide support for its implementation. Your signature can make a significant impact by protecting expectant mothers from OBV and ensuring their rights during childbirth.

Additionally, Ministries of Health, Gender and Public Service should collaborate to provide the necessary resources and support for the effective implementation of the bill once it is passed. Their active involvement is essential to address this pressing issue and protect the rights of expectant mothers in Kenya.

Your signature can help protect expectant mothers from obstetric violence and ensure they receive the respect and care they deserve during one of life’s most significant moments.

Please sign this petition to #AccelerateOBVBill and make childbirth safer for Kenyan women.
