Why this petition matters

Started by Keli'i Beyer

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and the Men's March Against Violence is an annual event to mobilize MEN in our community to lift their voices in support of safety for island families. The mission of the MMAV is to highlight the important role of men as allies in addressing domestic violence. #itsgonnatakeallofus

Domestic violence impacts all of us. The work to raise awareness belongs to all of us. Men are role models for others in urging a community wide commitment to this enormous and life-threatening crime. When men stand together against harm, they are emphasizing the need to prioritize attention, resources, and a change in attitudes.

Safe families are at the core of a healthy community. Everyone knows someone who has experienced or been threatened with abuse. It remains a secret and often occurs behind closed doors.

That should not keep us silent.

This year, October 7th, there will be a modified approach to maintaining this commitment by men to be involved in efforts to focus attention and raise awareness about the complexity and enormity of the problem. Please sign this petition, to acknowledge your willingness to join others in taking steps to honor those whose lives have been lost and those whose resilience has helped them survive.

This year’s theme is captured in the phrase e’ho’okanaka. It means to be a man of worth, to mature, to see one’s obligations clearly and to behave appropriately with others. This is what we need as a community to truly and effectively address domestic violence.

On October 7th, please take a picture with a sign you have made, or a pen signing this pledge, and post the photo to social media. Use the hashtag #e_hookanaka. This way, we can stand together in solidarity to end domestic violence.

Be on the lookout for more information about upcoming events and opportunities to be among your allies working to address domestic violence in our island communities.
