SAN DIEGO — What used to be a Coco's restaurant in San Diego's College Grove is now an empty building that has a litter of kittens trapped inside. CBS 8 learned the windows were recently boarded up with wood, leaving no way out for the animals.
Lauren Hiltz is the owner of Crazy Cat Rescue, was made aware of the kittens inside the building recently. She said a security guard notified her of the situation.
“They are going to die if we can't get them,” she said.
Hiltz was able to rescue a cat outside the former restaurant but worries something might happen to the kittens inside.
“We’re going to have 100 cats here or when they finally demolish it they are going to find a whole bunch of dead animals,” Hiltz said.
Hiltz said the kittens are on limited time.
“If they are too old they are going to be deemed community cats and are going to be thrown back in the gutter,” Hiltz said.
On the side of the former restaurant, there is an ‘available’ sign with a phone number. CBS 8 called that number and left a voicemail. They called back and said they were in the process of finding the owners.
“What I would love to do...get in there, trap all the cats, clear the area professionally,” Hiltz said.
CBS 8 also reached out to the San Diego Humane Society, they told our team that a Humane Law Enforcement Officer had been assigned to that location Friday.
