Visual artist Antoine Mitchell is watching all of his dreams come to life. He released his first comic book just a year ago…an “Afro-fantasy” called “Sankofa’s Eymbrace.” And now an exhibit featuring the work it took to get it done, is making the rounds at several branches of the East Baton Rouge Parish Library.
We caught up with Mitchell at the Carver Branch Library where an exhibit featuring much of the original artwork for “Sankofa’s Eymbrace”, opened a little more than a week ago.
“Sankofa is a West African term that means to back and fetch it’ or remember the past,” Mitchell explained.
The comic and the exhibit are the culmination of years of hard work and an inspiration that began with Mitchell’s love of art and all things fantastical. Mitchell’s always had a great love for comic books, movies, and video games.
“After playing this video game Final Fantasy, in particular Final Fantasy 8, I beat it and I cried at the ending, ” Mitchell told us “So I wanted to give people that same type of feeling.”
If you know anything about comic books, then you know it usually takes a big team to make one happen. But Mitchell’s is a team of just two. Antoine is penciller, writer, inker, letterer, and colorist . Wife Erica, his editor and sounding board. Together, the Mitchells two have managed to create a whole new world…with the hope that those who enter it, will be drawn in…and maybe even learn a little something along the way.
