Commercial nuclear innovation "new space" age
In early 2006, a start-up company launched a small rocket from a tiny island in the Pacific. It exploded, showering the island with debris. A year later, a second launch attempt sent a rocket to space but failed to make orbit, burning up in the atmosphere. Another year brought a third attempt—and a third failure. The following month, in September 2008, the company used the last of its funds to launch a fourth rocket. It reached orbit, making history as the first privately funded liquid-fueled rocket to do so.

Monetary Award
$1,200
divided amongst winning local sections
The Local Section Meritorious Award is presented to the ANS local sections that have conducted the most worthwhile events; have shown outstanding membership growth, participation, and administration during the award year. All official local sections of the Society are eligible for the award.
The award consists of a certificate and monetary award (up to $1,200 distributed amongst the sections). Awards are presented at the Local Section Workshop at the ANS Winter Conference. The selected sections are required to give a presentation on their category at the Local Section Workshop or future webinar.
Local sections submit the nomination worksheet and a 1-2 page summary stating which award categories the section wishes to be considered for. Sections may also submit supporting documentation that highlights the section’s most notable accomplishments from the past year.
Awards will be granted for each of the following categories:
This award was established in 1971 by the Local Sections Committee to recognize outstanding events by the local sections. In 2019, the ANS Education, Training and Workforce Development Division fully-funded the award to add a monetary stipend.
These are evaluated by a subcommittee composed of individuals from the Local Sections Committee and ANS Education, Training and Workforce Development Division, which selects the awardees. The national Honors and Awards Committee may consult as appropriate.
Nomination forms and supporting documents (in Word or Adobe Acrobat) should be emailed to honors@ans.org.
