SA Maritime Immersion Camp

South Australian high school students in Years 10-12 have an exciting opportunity to dive into a maritime experience across Tasmania and South Australia.

When and where is the camp?

The camp will take place over 5 days from Monday 24 June through to Friday 28 June, 2024. 

Camp students will visit the naval shipbuilding and submarine industry in Adelaide on Monday 24 June, then fly out to Tasmania to the Australian Maritime College in Tasmania for 4 days of hands-on maritime, engineering, and logistics activities on campus at the university.

Throughout the entire camp, students will be supervised and chaperoned by qualified South Australian Department of Education teachers and staff. In Tasmania, students will stay on campus at student accommodation.

Who can apply?

South Australian high school students in Years 10-12 are eligible to apply.

How are students selected?

Only 14 students from South Australia will be selected to attend the camp. Students must submit their application via the form below before Sunday 5 May, 2024 to be considered for the camp.

Students with interest to attend university to study in one or more of the following areas will be competitive: engineering, maths, science, physics, business, logistics, seafaring, and/or maritime.

What is the cost of the camp?

There is a $200 commitment to pay from each successful applicant. All other expenses are paid. This includes accommodation, meals, transport, and air fares.

About the Maritime Immersion Camp

The Maritime Immersion Camp is 5 days of fun hands-on learning experiences across Adelaide and Launceston for South Australian high school students in Years 10 - 12. The camp showcases careers and university study options in engineering, global logistics, and seafaring.

Students will visit the naval shipbuilding and submarine industry in Adelaide, then fly out to Tasmania for 4 days at the Australian Maritime College in Launceston.

The camp is jointly organised and supported by the Australian Maritime College and Le Fevre High School, and is funded by the South Australian Department of Education.

At the camp, students will tour the Adelaide submarine and naval shipbuilding industry, then fly out to Tasmania to drive boats on the Tamar River, take a practical survival at sea challenge, operate tug boats and 200m+ ships in immersive bridge simulators, design and test floating structure prototypes in an engineering challenge, plan a global shipping network in a logistics challenge, learn about autonomous vessels, meet experts and be inspired by current university students and researchers, and more.

As part of the camp, students will gain a deep understanding of the highly paid and in-demand career opportunities within the maritime industry and the specialist university degrees that can get them there.

Application Process

South Australian high school students in Years 10-12 are eligible to apply.

In the application, students will be required to:

1. Complete the application form below.

2. Submit a single pdf document with the form, including the following:

a. A short essay (no more than 250 words) answering the following questions:

- Why you should be selected for the Maritime Immersion Camp?

- What interests you about the maritime sector?

- What activities or extra-curricular are you involved with related to the maritime sector?

b. Short teacher's endorsement.

c. A copy of the student's latest academic report.

3. Inform their school principal that they have applied to attend the Maritime Immersion Camp by email or letter. Include this page link and contact details for the camp in the email or letter.

Conditions

There is a $200 commitment to pay for all successful applicants.

All submissions must be made before Midnight Sunday 5 May 2024 to be considered for selection to attend the camp.

All applicants will be informed of the outcome of the selection process by 5pm Friday 10 May 2024.

Only 14 students from South Australia will be selected to attend.
