This is the best I have found. It heats up instantly, melts the cord quickly and neatly. The added bonus is that it comes with an extra replacement tip that is stored right in the device. And the price was very reasonable. Who could ask for more?!?!
This thing heats nearly instantly, glows red hot, and goes through thread like it isn't even there. The thread seals, and melts, and you get a good solid end to your stitching. It fits in the hand well, and I love that there is a little spot for a spare wire in the battery compartment. You're probably going to need it.
The less good
This is a consequence of how hot it gets, and how well it works - it eats AAA batteries like Pez. I work with leather and need to trim a fair bit of thread on a regular basis. I swap out batteries a lot. Really, this is what led me to search for a rechargeable option.
The next thing is that the wire is super thin. Probably a good thing, and it is protected when not in use, by retracting into the body. But it is really thin. It bends and distorts easily, and I suspect mine is going to break soon, which is why I am glad I have the spare. With that said....
The spare wire in the battery compartment gets beaten up when I go to remove the battery compartment cover. I have smashed the wire into the body of the unit, more than once, even when I try to be careful opening it. So far, I have been able to bend my spare wire back into place without trouble, but, it is worrisome.
So, in summary, if you are going to use it occasionally, or you don't mind replacing batteries, you'll love how well this works. Really, great tool. You might want to consider squirrelling away the spare wire, just for the sake of not beating on it, but, it works really really well.
It swapping out batteries bugs you, you might want to look at https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0B2QNG388?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details. It is USB rechargeable, has a more substantial wire, and, while it doesn't glow red hot, it gets hot enough to melt the thread.
