ALWD supports its members’ professional development as teachers, scholars, and leaders through both teaching and scholarship grants.  These grants provide funding for legal writing professionals to pursue their scholarly interests and to develop innovative teaching materials.  In funding grants, ALWD focuses on providing resources to those who do not have other sources of funding for these endeavors.

In furtherance of ALWD's commitment to the professional development of legal research and writing faculty, ALWD partners with the Legal Writing Institute and LexisNexis to fund annual scholarship grants. These grants allow legal writing faculty to spend their summers exploring scholarly ideas and producing scholarship that will assist others in the field. The number of grants awarded each year and the amount of each grant depends on the quality of the applications and the funds available. Royalties from the ALWD Guide to Legal Citation are the primary source of funding for the grants.

Typically, the joint ALWD-LWI Scholarship Grants Committee calls for grant applications in late fall, and grant applications are typically due in mid-February.  Grant applicants may request mentors who will help the applicant develop the idea presented in the application; mentors do not participate in deciding who receives a grant. The Committee uses a blind review process to rank grant applications. The Committee then makes its recommendations to the ALWD and LWI Boards, which make the final decision regarding grant recipients and grant amounts.  In selecting grant recipients, the Committee and the Boards give significant weight to whether applicants are eligible for funding from their own schools.  Grant decisions are typically announced in April.
