Samuel O. Kwarteng Memorial Scholarship

samuel’s story

Samuel O. Kwarteng was murdered on April 13th, 2017, due to senseless gun violence. He was a senior at Virginia Commonwealth University, where he majored in Electrical Engineering, set to graduate at the young age of 20 that winter. Samuel was a man of integrity, with love for family, academics, and community. He touched the lives of everyone he encountered. Although his life was cut short, his legacy lives forever through his loved ones and through the many great qualities that he possessed. His legacy and accolades have paved the way for the organization to address the importance of a unified community and education. Samuel valued higher education and athletics as an essential part of a healthy lifestyle. Since his passing, AKT announces its annual Samuel O. Kwarteng Scholarship Award alongside a yearly basketball tournament where the funds are generated to fund the scholarship. Our goal is to help students to continue to achieve and remain resilient, despite their hardships, just as Samuel would have done. The annual scholarship award is provided to graduating high school seniors attending Fairfax, Prince Williams, Alexandria, Arlington, Prince George, Montgomery County and D.C. Public Schools. They must positively impact their communities and distinguish themselves as pioneers amongst their cohort. The $2000 award may only be used at an accredited two or four-year college or university to help with higher education expenses.
