LINCOLN, Neb. (KOLN) - The Christmas spirit could be felt in downtown Lincoln as Governor Jim Pillen and First Lady Suzanne Pillen hosted the tree lighting at the capitol.

Choirs from schools around Nebraska performed at the rotunda on Sunday.

The Governor followed up with a speech about being courageous and standing up for what you believe.

After the tree lighting the governor invited performers and families back to the Governor’s Mansion for cookies, hot chocolate, and pictures with Santa.

Suzanne Pillen said it was a way to bring in the holiday cheer.

“This isn’t just our home but everyone’s home that’s here so it’s just a fun day to be able to share it.”

Governor Jim Pillen added, “The residence is the people’s house and Suzanne had the idea, let’s make it a family festivities day. We’re all about Advent and Christmas so it’s great to share the place with residents.”

Children enjoyed other festivities like face painting, balloon animals, carriage rides, as well as photo ops with live animals.
