1. Inviting All Students, Staff and Families to Share Your Feedback

We want to hear from you on how we are doing. MCPS is inviting ALL students, staff and parents/caregivers to share your experiences and thoughts on academics, communication, and overall satisfaction with your school and the district and/or experience working at MCPS. Your input and insight are essential in helping us understand what is working well and areas of improvement. Your participation and any identifying information are completely confidential. The feedback collected will be used to inform decisions and help create a more supportive and enriching environment for students, staff, and families in our district.

2. Finalists Selected for Student Member of the Board of Education

Samantha Ross, a junior at Montgomery Blair High School, and Praneel Suvarna, a junior at Clarksburg High School, are the finalists for the 47th Student Member of the Board of Education (SMOB). Elections will be held on Wednesday, April 17. From a pool of eight students, Ms. Ross and Mr. Suvarna were chosen by more than 400 voting middle and high school delegates who attended the SMOB Nominating Convention at Watkins Mill High School. 3. Nominations Open for Distinguished Service to Public Education Awards

The Montgomery County Board of Education is seeking nominations from the public for its 27th Annual Awards for Distinguished Service to Public Education. The awards are sponsored by the Board to recognize and show appreciation to individuals, groups and organizations that have made exemplary contributions to public education in Montgomery County. 4. Upcoming Events, Reminders and Resources 

Join Us Saturday for Family Forum on Mental Health & Substance Use Prevention

Join the Springbrook High School PTSA Saturday, Feb. 24 for a family forum on maintaining strong mental health and preventing substance use. Attendees will learn about the dangers of fentanyl, alcohol and other substances; information to keep students safe; school and community-based substance use prevention, harm reduction and treatment initiatives and what insurance is required to cover. MCPS to Host Girls’ Summit on March 9

Join us for the Girls’ Summit on Saturday, March 9 at Northwood High School. This event will provide informative workshops geared towards students in grades 6–12 on a variety of current topics. Read more. RSVP

Summer RISE 2024 Student Registration Close Feb. 27

Registration is now open for students to be part of Summer RISE 2024. Summer RISE provides hands-on, career-based learning experiences to rising juniors and seniors and helps employers cultivate a talent pipeline. Registration closes Feb. 27. Learn more.

MCPS Partners with Girls With Impact

MCPS is partnering with Girls With Impact to bring a free Business and Leadership program for girls and gender expansive youth in Grades 9–12. Developed with leaders from Harvard University, this 10-week, online program begins March 11, and equips girls with the skills, knowledge and confidence to become entrepreneurs, innovators and leaders. 5.MCPS News This Week 

Black History Month: Hip Hop History and Culture Class at MCPS

In 2019, a Hip Hop History and Culture class was offered to high school students for the first time in MCPS at Montgomery Blair High School. The class, now also offered at Bethesda-Chevy Chase and Rockville high schools, aims to teach students about the cultural and social influence of hip-hop, combining history, sociology and social commentary. Students learn about its impact on politics, psychology and have moved into areas like mental health. Read more. 

Black History Month: Schools Highlight Black History Month 

From high schools to our youngest learners, MCPS schools have hosted events and opportunities throughout the month for students and staff to learn, give back, and celebrate African American culture and contributions. Read more

WATCH: 2024 HBCU Fair and How to Plan for College

Hundreds of students and their families packed this year’s HBCU Fair. The fair provided students in Grades 8–12 an opportunity to meet representatives from more than 40 HBCUs. Representatives shared information and answered questions from students and parents about admissions, financial aid, testing, majors and much more. If you missed it, be sure to watch a recap of tips shared with students who attended.
