1. Board of Education Appoints Dr. Monique Felder as Interim Superintendent of Schools 

The Montgomery County Board of Education appointed Dr. Monique Felder as interim superintendent of schools at its business meeting on Tuesday, Feb. 6.

Dr. Felder brings 32 years of experience in public education, including as superintendent for Orange County Public Schools in North Carolina, where she was nominated regional superintendent of the year. Read more.

2. Second Quarter Report Cards Available on ParentVUE

Marking Period two report cards were distributed to students earlier this week and are now available on ParentVue. Report cards were distributed by schools and sent home with your child. Learn More About Financial Aid for College

Do you have questions about the process of getting financial aid for your university studies? Are you an undocumented student who wants to know more about opportunities to receive financial aid? Partnering with MCPS, Montgomery College will hold a virtual workshop on Thursday, Feb. 15 at 6 p.m. to learn more about the process. The virtual session will be in Spanish. RSVP 

Family Forum on Mental Health & Substance Use Prevention Set for Feb. 24 

Join Springbrook High School PTSA on Saturday, Feb. 24 for a Family Forum on maintaining strong mental health and preventing substance use. Attendees will learn about the dangers of fentanyl, alcohol and other substances; information to keep students safe; school and community-based substance use prevention, harm reduction treatment initiatives and what insurance is required to cover. Summer RISE 2024 Student Registration Open

Registration is now open for students to be part of Summer RISE 2024. Summer RISE provides hands-on, career-based learning experiences to rising juniors and seniors and helps employers cultivate a talent pipeline. Registration closes Feb. 27. Learn more.

Coming Soon: Important District Wide Survey 

MCPS is working to improve teaching and making our schools and district a more welcoming place for all students, families, and staff and we need your help. A survey will be available on Monday, Feb. 12  asking for your feedback on the school district. All students, families, and staff are encouraged to participate. The survey will be open from February 12 through March 15.

4. End-of-Course Exams Reminder for Grade 9 Students 

The Maryland Comprehensive Assessment Program (MCAP) End-of-Course (EOC) exams for science and government will count as 20 percent of the final grade for ninth grade students (Class of 2027) in their respective high school level biology and government (NSL) courses. This is due to changes to high school graduation requirements issued by the Maryland State Department of Education. Read more.

Recognizing National School Counseling Week 

Join MCPS as we say thank you to all the wonderful counselors who serve students and parents during National School Counseling Week. This year’s theme is “School Counseling: Standards-Based, Student-Focused," to focus public attention on the unique contribution professional school counselors make in helping students.

Celebrating  Black History Month

The Montgomery County Council recently recognized Montgomery Blair High School teacher Kenneth Smith for helping develop and teach the Hip Hop History and Culture social studies course, which is also offered at Bethesda-Chevy Chase and Rockville high schools. 

Montgomery County Police Chief Marcus Jones was a guest reader at Fairland Elementary School during the school’s Black History Month recognition. 

Teams from all 25 MCPS high schools cheered, jumped and danced through the 27th annual Pompons competition on Feb. 3 at Montgomery Blair High School. Check out the photo gallery. 

Lunar New Year Dinner Raises Thousands for Student Scholarships

More than $16,000 was raised at this year’s Lunar New Year scholarship dinner at Hong Kong Pearl Seafood Restaurant. The dinner, presented by the League of Educators for Asian American Progress (LEAAP), is a scholarship fundraiser for Asian Pacific American high school seniors interested in pursuing a degree in education.
