Introductory Overview Lecture: Variance Estimation for Probability and Nonprobability Surveys

Variance estimation for probability surveys (309879)

*Dan Liao, RTI

Variance estimation for probability surveys relies on well-developed theory. In the first part of this lecture, we review Taylor series linearization and replicate-based (e.g., jackknife and balanced repeated replication [BRR]) methods used with weighted survey data. We touch upon components of the sampling design and weighting process to ensure a common understanding. Then, we discuss the relative benefits and limitations of different variance estimation methods through practical examples using different statistical software packages.
