Covid hospitalizations top 300 mark for first time since September

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Covid hospitalizations in West Virginia topped 300 in West Virginia Wednesday for the first time in nearly four months in numbers posted by the state Department of Health and Human Resources.

The agency said there are 309 patients which is 45 more patients than the day before.

There were 44 patients in ICU in Wednesday’s update. That number was 30 patients on Tuesday.

The last time hospitalizations topped 300 was back on Sept. 9 when there were 304 covid patients. Hospitalizations dropped to 114 patients around Thanksgiving.

State InterAgency Task Force Director Jim Hoyer expressed concern Tuesday about a possible surge in covid cases in connection with holiday gatherings.

There were 461 new cases confirmed in Wednesday’s numbers with total covid cases now at 1,085.
