CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Gov. Jim Justice says losing a West Virginian to COVID-19, including a teenage girl from Nicholas County, is tragic and something no family should have to go through.
“It takes on a different level of sadness when you think that we’ve lost a 13 year old. A beautiful 13 year old girl. Please keep her and all of her family and loved ones in your prayers,” Justice said during Tuesday’s COVID media briefing.
The teenage girl is among the 7,253 people in West Virginia who have died of COVID-19, according to the state Department of Health and Human Resources.
“This is the youngest COVID death we’ve had so far in West Virginia. It’s just terrible,” Justice said.
The state reported two new deaths on Tuesday including a 60 year old man from Kanawha County and a 74 year old man from Greenbrier County.
“While mostly all were over the age of 65, some of them were not,” state InterAgency Task Force Director Jim Hoyer said. “We need to continue to pay attention to what the governor presses us on with vaccines.”
Active COVID cases fell slightly by less than 100 and are currently at 2,632.
There are 340 COVID patients hospitalized in West Virginia.
