CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Active coronavirus cases in West Virginia have fallen below 9,000, marking the first time the state has been below the threshold since Nov. 12, 2020.
The state Department of Health and Human Resources on Sunday reported 8,954 active cases with a 3.77% daily positive test rate. There are no red counties on the department’s county alert system map; Berkeley, Hampshire, Wetzel, Doddridge, Ritchie, Putnam, Cabell, Lincoln and Boone counties are orange.
Hospitalizations have declined to 289 cases, the lowest amount since Nov. 11, 2020. There are 75 intensive care cases and 39 people on ventilators.
The department also noted there have been 269,392 first doses of coronavirus vaccines administered so far, and 166,186 people are fully vaccinated.
The number of deaths increased to 2,261; officials confirmed the deaths of a 69-year-old female from Logan County; a 77-year-old male from Logan County; a 73-year-old male from Cabell County; a 75-year-old male from Kanawha County; a 71-year-old female from Monongalia County; a 75-year-old male from Monongalia County; and a 74-year-old male from Hancock County.
Health officials on Friday reported three cases of the United Kingdom variant. West Virginia University confirmed two of the cases involve students.
