Aaron Jones had, arguably, the best season of his career. The Green Bay Packers, on the other hand, did not have a season worth celebrating. That being said, Jones proved that he is one of the most important players that the Packers have on offense. While many presumed that this would be his last year in Green Bay due to his cap hit in 2023, it has become evident that, despite the price tag, the Packers cannot afford to let Jones go.
Brian Gutekunst Expects Aaron Jones to Be Back in 2023
In his end of the year press conference, Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst quipped, “With the way we’re doing things lately, we’ll probably restructure everybody and try to keep making some room.” Of course, there is no way that the Packers will keep everyone from 2022. How could they? Clearly the roster was not good enough.
Going into this offseason, the Packers are about $13 million over the cap for 2023. When one figures the cost of signing their 2023 draft picks, that figure jumps to about $17.25 million. The Packers could save over $10 million by cutting Aaron Jones, which would go a long way to help creating some necessary cap space. While nothing is official yet, it sounds like Gutekunst does not anticipate that happening.
“Certainly, we expect to have him back. He’s a dynamic player. It’s amazing. For a guy his size, to bring it every day, he rarely misses a practice, rarely misses a rep. The way he leads that football team, his consistency is amazing.”
Aaron Jones Wants to Be Back with the Packers in 2023
In his own end of the year press conference, Aaron Jones was asked if he wanted to be back with the Packers next season. His response: “I control what I can control. I’d love to be here, so hopefully they feel the same way about me.” This is certainly great news for the Packers and their fans. Last season, Jones had a career-high 1,121 rushing yards. He also was just two yards shy of tying his career-high in all-purpose yards. Jones finished his 2019 season with 1,518 all-purpose yards; he finished with 1,516 this past year.

My early Christmas list includes ALL players return to the roster for 2023. The season was NOT caused by a player deficiency. Instead, it was caused by poor coaching. LaFluer said Joe Barry will return. Isn’t this like the definition of a crazy person, where a person continuously performs a task with expectations of different outcomes each time. Trade? Trade LaFluer…now!
