MLB pipeline has released their 2023 Brewers top 30 prospect list. As expected, there was no major shakeup at the top of the list for Jackson Chourio, Sal Frelick, Joey Wiemer, Garrett Mitchell, and Brice Turang all still makeup the top five prospects. However, in the middle to the end, there were some players who made big jumps as well as falls.
Here are three observations from the updated 2023 Brewers top 30 prospect list.
Brewers top 30 prospect list observation #1: Robert Moore rose six spots.
Entering the 2023 season, switch-hitting prospect Robert Moore is ranked 11th. To end last season he was 17th. The 72 overall pick in last year’s draft played very well over the winter for the Brisbane Bandits in Australia. In 40 games he mashed eight home runs and had a .894 OPS. There is a lot to be excited about with Moore and he is a player to keep an eye on this season.
Brewers top 30 prospect list observation #2: Russell Smith has dropped outside the top 30.
In 2021 the Brewers selected southpaw Russell Smith 51st overall out of Texas Christian. The 6’7″ starting pitcher made 15 starts for the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers (A+ level) last season in which he covered 68.1 innings and had a 4.87 ERA. He will have to have a bounce back season in 2023 in order to get back on the Brewers top 30 prospect list in which he was previously ranked as high as 20th.
Brewers top 30 prospect list observation #3: Jace Avina has cracked the top 30 list.
At 19 years old, outfielder Jace Avina has a ton of raw power. In 64 games last year, split between the Rookie complex and Low-A, he mashed 15 home runs. He earned Arizona Complex League MVP honors, but the right-handed hitter was humbled a bit in Low-A as he struck out 42 times in 102 at-bats. He has the speed to stick in center field but could shift to right field in the future due to a strong throwing arm.
