Freeports are areas around a maritime port or airport where goods can be imported without having to pay import tariffs. A step forward came Wednesday from regional leaders in Southwest Virginia to promote investment in the offshore wind industry.

A number of experts and consultants from the Xodus group have joined other economic leaders in the region to study the region's capability in the transition from coal mining communities to other sustainable energy sources.

Project Veer has identified and recommended businesses and training opportunities for the wind energy supply chain efforts.

Project leaders have been working with counterparts in Eastern Virginia and Hampton Roads to establish partnerships.

The presidents of four Southwest Virginia community colleges signed a memo of understanding Wednesday as part of their commitment to prepare and train future employees in the industry.

The agreement is the first of its kind in the Commonwealth.
