Anitta Introduces Us to “Girl From Rio”

A beachy music video accompanies the new single from the Brazilian sensation

Anitta’s influence and fanbase already reaches far and wide, and her newest release should serve to give it a big boost. The Brazilian singer drops her first English language single, “Girl From Rio,” with a music video to boot, giving us the double dose dip into her coming album.

The song is a trap-pop song that features the familiar sounds of an old-timey commercial, like something you’d see on “WandaVision.” The track is an ode to her upbringing in Rio de Janeiro, shining light on the fun-loving culture while also commenting on some of the less fun stuff, like teen pregnancy and poverty. For Brazilians, it’s like a party pack of trivia, interspersed with some Portuguese lyrics.

The Giovanni Bianco-directed music video really turns up the heat to an 11. The video starts off with a 60s themed beach party in front of an idyllic background featuring Anitta and a few high-waisted beachwear-clad men. The background then opens up to reveal a real Rio beach party, chock full of people in several states of undress. There’s twerking, there’s street food, there’s making out in the water, there’s beach volleyball, and there’s Anitta in a bikini lounging seaside and enjoying the scene.

The song joins previous drops “Loco,” “Me Gusta,” and “Tócame” as singles from her newest album, also named Girl From Rio. The album, her fifth, is set to release sometime in 2021 (although, let’s be honest, wouldn’t summer just be the perfect time for it?). The album is her first multilingual record, featuring songs in English, Spanish, and Portuguese, and will be executive produced by OneRepublic’s Ryan Tedder.
