What was the moment you knew you wanted to represent your country in the Olympic Games? Was it always in the sport of water polo?
There was no single moment that I knew that I wanted to do this. It took a lot of little moments of me believing in my ability and support from the people who believed in me, as well. Getting to the point where I really had the confidence to set as a goal to represent the U.S. in my sport was a journey and a half.
What is your hidden talent?
I can do a back walkover, and I’m halfway to a back handspring.
What is your favorite karaoke song?
“Too Good at Goodbyes” by Sam Smith
If you could compete in another sport during the Olympic Games what would it be and why?
Biathlon, but there’s no real reason; it just seems like an interesting sport. Once I learn to ski and shoot, it’s over for everyone else.
What is one thing you have to have with you when you travel?
My Beats!
Biggest superstition if you have one?
I’m not superstitious, but I am a little stitious.
What is your biggest fear?
That one day when I least expect it, someone will push my head while I’m drinking from a water fountain and all my teeth will break…or clowns. I don’t know which is worse.
What causes are most dear to your heart?
Teaching swimming to underserved populations. Equity and equality in education.
What are two truths and a lie about you?
My favorite movie of all time is “The Green Mile.”
I’ve always wanted to be a celebrity chef, but I can’t cook.
I believe the correct way to say center defender is “D-hole.”
Do you have a nickname? How did you get it?
My nickname on the team is Ayay. My teammates gave it to me!
What song would be included on your life's soundtrack?
“I Can” by Nas.
What advice would you give your younger self, and what would you remind your older self?
Don’t let fear be the reason you don’t try something, let it be the reason you do.
