I teach at a large, urban, public school with almost 1,030 students. Our students come from a variety of different economic backgrounds with the majority of our students receiving free or reduced-price lunch. Our school is one of the most ethnically diverse schools with a very active military influence.
I teach future authors, members of the military, doctors, teachers, engineers, and productive future contributors to society.
I teach students who are always asking why and ready to take learning to the next step.
My Project
For almost a year now, student learning has been primarily online. Supporting SEL practices like group discussions, art projects, read aloud, response journals, and daily check-ins are proving to be a success during distance learning in our classroom. Our attendance and willingness to participate in online school have been extremely successful despite our daily technology challenges.
Screen breaks, mask breaks, and brain breaks are a part of our daily routines and we need new art tools for our students in the classroom.
Hot glue and paint is a great resource to use on recycled cardboard for making posters and is the perfect escape from our Chromebook screen as it invites students into a world of color. This selection of colorful art tools allows students to be creative instead of learning how to format a document or create a slideshow. In the STEAM lab, we want all students to explore the discipline of art as we continue to "think like artist" into STEAM.
