2022 Midterm Election Calendar

The scheduled date for each state’s 2022 primary election† is listed on this page. 46 states hold traditional single party contests. In nine of those states, some races may require a runoff election to be decided. A tenth state, Maine, uses a ranked choice voting tabulation, where necessary. Nominated candidates meet in the November 8 general election.

In the four remaining states, all candidates from all parties appear on a single ballot. The top two finishers in California and Washington advance to the general election, while in Alaska the top four advance. The Alaska system is being used for the first time, after being approved by voters in a 2020 referendum. Louisiana has a hybrid system, with no nominees determined prior to a November 8 all-party primary. A candidate can win an election that day by getting a majority of the vote, otherwise there is a top two runoff.

As each primary is held, click or tap the state name for live election results.

Except as specified in footnotes 6 and 7, this includes elections for U.S. House, as well as U.S. Senate and governor, where applicable. It will also include primaries for legislature in most states. Primaries for municipal elections (e.g., mayor) and special elections may occur on other dates and are not reflected on this calendar.

Runoff Election: Some states require a runoff between the top two finishers in a primary election where no candidate achieves a required threshold:

1 AL, AR, GA, MS, OK, SC, TX: A majority of the vote. GA rule also applies to general election.
2 North Carolina: 30% of the vote and only if requested by 2nd place finisher.
3 South Dakota: More than 35% of the vote. Applies to congressional and gubernatorial primaries only.
4 Louisiana: A majority of the vote. Where a runoff is not needed, the winner of the all-party primary is elected.

5 Ranked Choice Voting is used in Maine primaries. Voters rank candidates on the ballot in order of preference. If no candidate receives a majority of the vote, an automated tabulation is conducted - using these preferences - to determine a majority winner. It is sometimes called an instant runoff in that a separate election is not needed. See this video for a fuller explanation.

Split Primary: Redistricting delays require some states to hold two primary elections:

6 Ohio: The second primary (August 2) will include elections for State Senate and State House.
7 New York: The second primary (August 23) will include elections for U.S. House and State Senate.

Here is a 2022 calendar with event dates highlighted.
