Colonial High School
CHS Community Member
This is our first edition since Hurricane Ian and I hope it finds you and your family having fared the storm okay. As we all know, the effects of the event varied widely around Florida with many households facing catastrophic conditions. The Foundation for OCPS has organized to help our own OCPS families and schools here in Orange County. If you need help and you are a current employee, student or parent of OCPS students, please click here for more information.

The storm also impacted several CHS events which had already been planned. Please look over the calendar below closely and for those families with underclassmen, please be sure to attend CHS Underclassmen Night on its new date, this Thursday, October 13. This is a one-stop opportunity to acquire some excellent information on graduation requirements, college planning, dual enrollment, and more.

As we are set to begin the second quarter this Monday, I want to remind all our families to please get your PTSA membership. The cost for an entire school year is only $5.00. We rely upon the PTSA as they do a lot of good work for both Colonial students and teachers. Therefore, if you have yet to get your membership, would you kindly do so today? Thank you for your support of PTSA.

Thank you very much for reading and I look forward to seeing everyone back on Monday morning for a successful start to the next nine weeks!

Grenadier Academics
Colonial Medical Academy
Colonial Medical Academy was invited for the second year as the ambassador school for the UCF High School Mini Clinic, which was held on Saturday Sept. 10th from 9am to 12 noon. We had a great turn out for 10th, 11th, and 12th grade students.
Pictured below: Students actively participating in CPR and AED training, students also tour the UCF Medical School Simulation labs, where they were able to see a manikin intubation and a manikin delivering a premature baby.
Debate Team
On September 25, CHS hosted the first North Florida Catholic Forensic League Debate tournament of the year. This is Colonial’s first time competing with this league, and we brought home the first ever Small School 1st Place Team Sweepstakes award! This is based on the overall performance of our students.
Shekinah Henriette and Mackenzie Cosme both earned third place in novice and varsity extemporaneous speaking, where they get a prompt and 30 minutes to prepare a 7 minute speech without the use of notes. Katie Klinkhammer also tried extemporaneous speaking for the first time ever. Tristen Remy, Pedro Geliga, and Ethan Mills all competed in Student Congress and each of them were able to give a support speech and participate in questioning the bills they were voting on.

Thank you to Mr. Kernek and Mr. Kaminski for judging the competition, and Mr. Antione for coming out to support our students.

Scholarships:
The Coca-Cola Scholars Program Scholarship (Due Oct. 31)
The Coca-Cola Scholars Program scholarship is an achievement-based scholarship awarded to students in their final year of high school. Students are recognized for their capacity to lead and serve, as well as their commitment to making a significant impact on their schools and communities. With the 34th class in 2022, the Foundation has provided over 6,600 Coca-Cola Scholars with more than $78 million in educational support. 150 Coca-Cola Scholars are selected each year to receive this $20,000 scholarship. Apply here through October 31, 2022.

Hispanic Heritage Foundation Youth Awards (Due Nov. 13)
The Youth Awards was founded in 1998 by the Hispanic Heritage Foundation. Now entering its 24th year, the Youth Awards honors Latino high school seniors who excel in the classroom and community and for their excellence in various categories including: Business & Entrepreneurship, Community Service, Education, Engineering, Green Sustainability, Healthcare & Science, Media & Entertainment, Public Service & Social Justice, and Technology.

Gold, Silver and Bronze recipients are selected in each category and receive a one-time grant to fund their college education or to fund a community service effort that tackles a social issue.

College Financial Aid Forms:
REMINDER! The FAFSA and the FFAA are now both open!!

The Florida Financial Aid Application (Bright Future scholarships) and the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) became available Saturday, October 1st. Make sure to work on and submit both ASAP. Remember scholarships for the FFAA are good for 5 years. Even if you leave the state and come back for another degree, you can still use it for school. This may seem rare, but it happens quite frequently. Also, note that some colleges and universities will not give you a financial aid award if you do not complete the FAFSA. Lots of great reasons and benefits to complete both!
