The Tiger's Roar!
Jones High School Community Brief
Thursday, November 30, 2023
Jones HS Community Member,

As you might expect, this is an exciting week on campus as the varsity football team just won another major game propelling our Tigers into the state championship semifinals on Friday vs. Homestead High Senior School in Miami-Dade County. Jones competes in the FHSAA 3M classification which includes some of the toughest football programs both here in Florida and in the USA. There are 64 football teams within our FHSAA 3M classification and our Tigers have fought their way into the final four putting our football program at the 94th percentile. Congratulations to Head Coach Williams, the entire Jones coaching staff, our trainers, our volunteers and a team of young men who have competed at the highest level all along. Moreover, our football players have continuously exhibited outstanding sportsmanship which reflects so well on The GREAT Jones High School.

While our football team prepares to head for Miami, academically this has also been a key week. Many students have been engaged in retake testing and the FAST PM 2 exams for 9th and 10th grades will be coming up next Tuesday (see Testing segment below details). Today our families will also be able to review their student's second quarter progress reports online via our student information system—Skyward. If you have a student at Jones this year, please invest a little time to review their grades with them right away as there are still over three weeks of instruction left in this second quarter and for the first semester—enough time to make positive changes as needed.

Finally, please note that this coming Monday, December 4 we will have our monthly SAC and PTSA meetings (details are just below). These are not long meetings, but they are the last meetings of each for 2023. If you are able, please make every effort to join us Monday evening. As I have written in this space before, we depend heavily upon direct community feedback for our continuing school improvement efforts.

Thank you for reading and Go Tigers! Defeat the Broncos!

Principal

International Baccalaureate (IB) Program:
Above and just below:
The IB department hosted an Extended Essay camp where students of our IB program worked on their IB Extended Essay assignment. Students were encouraged to complete 1,000 words while students used portions of their research to form their argument and/or experiment process depending on their subject matter. Mr. Lioce and Mrs. Blackmon are seen helping students properly cite their sources to support or disprove their claim.
Rigor in the Classroom:
Just above and below:
The Jones High School Instructional Leadership team completed a Classroom Walkthrough Day for courses that have state assessments. The purpose of the walk was to gauge classroom environment, student engagement in courses, and overall teacher support and instructional practice. The Instructional Leadership team was able to see classrooms with high engagement strategies and teachers providing high levels of support to ensure students success. The team enjoyed the opportunity to collaborate and developed an action plan for our next steps to ensure the academic growth of the GREAT Jones High School.
Tiger Pride Highlight
The #1 leading indicator of our students' future academic success is up sharply so far this school year.
Student attendance is at its highest rate in recent years. While previous yearly gains, and losses at times, may have been at most 2%, we currently see an overall average growth of 14 percentage points in just one school year’s difference (82% to 96%). Keep up the great work Tigers!

Orlando Sentinel - FHSAA football region finals: DeLand, Jones advance to state semifinals
Class 3 Metro Region 1
No. 4 Jones 24, No. 3 Tampa Bay Tech 21

Jones scored three touchdowns on its first five possessions and George Brown IV came up with a game-clinching interception with 26 seconds left as the Tigers (10-3) held on to win on the road.

Jones will travel to South Florida to face Homestead (11-1) in next week’s state semifinal game. The Tigers lost to Homestead 30-24 in a semifinal last year in Orlando.

“We came out shooting bullets to go up 21-0 in the first quarter,” Jones coach Elijah Williams said. “But then the third quarter was pretty bad. We got penalty after penalty and we put ourselves in bad situations. Then we shanked a punt at the 20 and they scored, but the defense played lights-out.”

The Tigers’ defense kept Oregon commit Dallas Wilson out of the end zone, and although he did make a number of catches, the Jones defenders did not make anything easy.

Jones, a state runner-up in 2019, reaches a final four for the fourth time in a five-year span under Williams. Before his arrival, the Tigers’ only FHSAA state semifinal appearance came in 1990.

Jones rallied to avenge a regular-season defeat and dealt the region’s top seed, Edgewater, its first loss last week.

Jones at Homestead (3M): This is a rematch from last year's state semifinals, in which Homestead traveled into Orlando and defeated Jones 30-24. You best believe the Fightin' Tigers have not forgotten that loss and would love to pay back the Broncos by giving them a loss at Harris Field.

Club Feature: Science Club
Members of JHS Science Club attended the AIChE STEM Showcase at the Hyatt Regency hotel in Orlando. The Showcase featured a chemistry demonstration by Kate the Chemist and various booths presented by college students, where we also took part in hands-on experiments.

At the event, we explored how chemical engineering can improve companies' operations as well as our own daily lives. We learned about how different voltages can change the titanium coating, also called "anodization." This process can be used to change the color of metal. We built a mini model of a continuous process machine that is used to automatically combine substances in industry. It helped us to realize that there are many variables that go into material and mechanical design to see what's the more effective method.

The last experiment we participated in was "Chroma threads." The purpose of this experiment was to compare store bought food dye, hibiscus coloring and canned beets to see which was more effective dye- which meant that we also had to look at parameters such as cost, color intensity, etc. In essence, this showcase did give us a deeper insight to how chemical engineering can improve the mass production of products and better the lives of others.

Vital Signs:
1) The US economy by industry as measured by GDP:
What this means for our Tigers: GDP or "Gross Domestic Product" is a term for the dollar value of all the goods and services produced in America. The chart illustrates where GDP is coming from by industry type. Understanding this breakdown can partly help students with college & career planning. By the way, 88% of of GDP comes from private industries, the rest comes from government spending at the city/county, state and federal levels.

2) Gender and racial makeup of US STEM students:
What this means for our Tigers: Today, STEM workers have annual earnings of about $64,000 vs. $40,000 for those working in non-STEM occupations which is a very significant difference. As you look at the chart it is rather unbalanced all the way down. This spells opportunity if you are someone interested in science, tech, engineering, or math as US companies want to see this more evenly distributed to reflect our nation.
