The McNair Scholars Application
The Program
The University of North Texas Dallas McNair Scholars Program initiated in the 2017-2018 academic year. The Ronald E. McNair Post-Baccalaureate Program is a federally-funded TRIO program administered by the U.S. Department of Education and serves a diverse group of talented UNT Dallas sophomores, juniors, and seniors who are interested and invested in pursuing graduate education and earning a Ph.D. UNT Dallas’ McNair Scholars Program provides enriching scholastic and holistic experiences that prepare eligible students to be successful applicants to competitive graduate programs.
UNT Dallas TRIO Programs
Develop Scholars’ Academic, Emotional, Ethical, Physical and Social Skills for Transformational Impact in Life, School and Leadership.
Eligibility:
McNair Scholars are selected on a competitive basis. To be eligible, an applicant must:
- Be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident
- Be a UNT Dallas undergraduate student not graduating prior to Fall 2024
- Have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher
- Meet one of the following requirements:
•Meet the income guidelines defined by the US DOE AND be a first-generation college student, OR
•Be a member of a group underrepresented in graduate education (e.g. Black, Hispanic, Native American, or Pacific Islander)
- Intend to pursue a Ph.D. after graduation. The McNair Program is not intended for students pursuing professional degrees (e.g. veterinary, medical or law degrees)
Program Requirements
Students must demonstrate a true commitment to pursuing doctoral studies and agree to participate in all of the following: intensive faculty-guided summer research program and ongoing research during the academic year, research methods & writing courses, GRE prep classes, seminars, workshops, and advisement meetings with McNair staff. Participants are required to maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0.
