Stockton Rolls in Second Half for 24-13 Victory

Galloway, NJ – Stockton University (4-1) scored 15 of the 17 goals in the second half and rolled to a 24-13 win over Widener University (1-3) on Wednesday night in the team's home opener for 2023. Luc Swedlund (Randolph/Randolph) scored five goals with two assists for a team-high seven points on the night.
 
After Stockton tallied two of the first three markers to start the game, the Pride answered with five of the next six goals for a 6-3 lead after one period of play. The teams played an even second quarter, but the Ospreys still trailed 11-9 at the break.
 
Stockton exploded in the third quarter outscoring Widener 8-1 on the strength of seven different Ospreys hitting the net. Swedlund and Sean Haddock (East Windsor/Hightstown) led the group with a pair of tallies each, while Steven Woolery (Media, PA/Penncrest) scored his first career goal in the stanza.
 
The home team kept up the onslaught in the final period, scoring seven of the eight goals to salt the game away. Widener scored their only tally of the frame at 12:30, but Tyler Horvath (Chalfont, PA/Central Bucks South) answered off a face-off five seconds later. Haddock potted two more goals, with Evan Deans (Olney, MD/James Hubert Blake) tallying his first of the year.
 
Hayden Smallwood (Margate/Ocean City), Dante Poli (Doylestown, PA/Central Bucks South) and Jake Waltz (Mickleton/Kingsway) finished off the scoring for the game.
 
Haddock added four goals, with Smallwood and Reegan Capozzoli (Wayne/Wayne Valley) chipping in with three markers each. Capozzoli and Poli dished three assists each, with Poli tying the record for career assists at Stockton with Rory McPeek (1997-2000) at 137.
  
Horvath had a monster game winning 30-38 (.789) face-offs with a game-high 18 ground balls. Brendan Scanlon (Philadelphia, PA/Archbishop Ryan) had three caused turnovers. Goalkeeper Colin Bernstein (Warrington, PA/Central Bucks South) made seven saves in earning his second win of the season.
 
For Widener, Connor Heisman and Wesley Sporer tallied four goals each, with Heisman adding four assists for a game-high eight points. Netminder Keegan Billie made 21 saves in the loss in 59:02 minutes of play. Sam Heister played 58 seconds with one save.
 
Stockton will play at home again on Saturday when the Ospreys will face Marymount University. Game time is set for 1pm.
