Samuel Arentz III

Samuel Arentz III passed away peacefully at his home with family on April 5th, 2022. Sam was born on July 19th, 1944 in Salt Lake City, UT, to parents Samuel Arentz II and Mary-Alice Arentz (Meagher). He was raised with four siblings, Cathy, Susan, Nick and Corey. The sibling's strong bond was evident in the enormous joy they found in each other's company. The family spent their early years in the small mining communities of Pioche and Castleton, NV then moved to Salt Lake City where Sam lived from grade school until moving with his own family to Colorado in 1980. Sam received his B.A. in Mathematics in 1966 from Colorado College. He then attended graduate school at The Mackay School of Mines.

In June of 1968, he married Trudie Edsall of Sparks, NV who passed away from cancer in 2008. Together they had three children: Cary, who also died of cancer this past July, Chris, and Kit. Sam had a total of 6 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren, with many cousins, nieces, nephews and extended family. Sam was fortunate to find another life-partner in Susan Burgamy of Denver, CO. They spent many years together traveling and enjoying each other's company.

Sam spent a majority of his career as an independent consultant, evaluating and managing mineral properties. He worked with his Father, Sam, and brother, Nick, in the Arentz and Son's Engineering firm in Salt Lake City in the 1970s and then had his own firm in Colorado and then in Reno, Nevada where he, eventually, semi-retired.

Sam devoted much of the last couple decades to the continued success of the Mackay School of Mines at UNR. He served on multiple boards and valued all the friends and colleagues he made along the way at UNR and among the broader mining community.

Sam had a passion for storytelling. Those fortunate enough to know him can recall many rooms full of the laughter and joy that Sam brought with him everywhere he went. He loved, laughed and lead at a consistency that was unmatched. He will be dearly missed.

To end on Sam's own words, "Live each day for the joy that is there. Life is too short not to appreciate those who are willing to share it with us."

A Celebration of Life will be held at Red Hawk Resort in Sparks on Sunday July 24th at 2PM. Please RSVP to Samantha Aloia (850) 220-8221.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St Jude Children's Hospital www.stjude.org/donate
