Problem Statement

The Tsachila community lacks a sufficient clean water source. Water is drawn from shallow wells contaminated by outdoor latrines containing bacteria and parasites. Poor water sanitation was present in 40 homes tested causing adverse health effects including chronic anemia in â…“ of children present. Past water purification systems have failed due to complexity and limited resources. A sustainable, low maintenance, and low-cost solution is needed to improve overall health with clean drinking water.

Project Advisors

Dr. Wayne Sanderson

Dr. Sanderson is a Professor in the Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering Department at the University of Kentucky. He is also the Director of the Southeast Center for Agricultural Health and Injury Prevention as well as the Director of the Central Appalachian Regional Education Research Center. He is our connection to the Shoulder to Shoulder organization which leads medical brigades in the Tsachila community.
