New Data Science and Statistics Courses!

The Data Science Revolution is HERE, and SDUSD is ready for it!

In 2021, the San Diego Unified School District made a commitment with Data Science 4 Everyone, joining over 270 other organizations that have committed to actions that promote data literacy. In making our commitment, we joined a cause that is impacting over 3 million students, 25,000 educators, and 500 school districts! In 2022, SDUSD committed again, and joins 20 states across the nation offering Data Science pathways in their math courses.

SDUSD commits to: Offering Data Science courses to grades 11 and 12 (2020-21 and forward); Challenge and empower both existing and emerging pathways to career and college readiness by increasing access and opportunities to more upper level mathematics courses for all students; Implementing introductory mathematical modeling using Data Science in grades 6-10 (21-22); Expanding to PreK-5 (22-23).

We will design and facilitate professional learning opportunities for educators and administrators (TK-12), foster family outreach, design curriculum, and align the work to post-secondary education expectations.

Additionally, San Diego Unified is partnering with CourseKata to bring our students TWO innovative data science and statistics courses based on the latest in the learning sciences. These courses incorporate authentic tools used by real data scientists, help students learn algebra in a way used by researchers, and explore important implications of math and statistics in many exciting contexts (e.g., policing, business, politics, public health). Data Science 1,2 Class Visits UCSD's Data Science Institute!

Morse High School's Renee Hill takes her Data Science 1,2 classes to UCSD's Halicioglu Data Science Institute on Data Science Day! Students toured the campus, saw a live Intro to Data Science lecture, and got to listen to and interview Data Scientists - aspiring and practicing, and every level in between!

Two-Course Data Science Sequence LIVE and Offering College Credit!

Thanks to the University of California Office of the President (UCOP), we are now poised to offer Data Science 1,2 as a 3rd year math course! This amazing course has also paved the way for SDUSD to continue working with the CourseKata team to build a new 4th year course - Data Science 3,4 Honors! With massive gratitude to professors at San Diego's Mesa Community College, we're super excited to announce that the 2-course sequence (when passed with a "B" or better and a "B" or better on the end of course project), will not only offer weighted credit for the 3,4 course, but also will grant college credit for Introductory Statistics (Math 119 at SD Community Colleges and SDSU, Math 11 at UCSD). That's TWO weighted credits on a high school transcript! We are opening doors to post-secondary education and breaking barriers!
