Week of May 6th

Teaching Spotlight

This week, we highlight the arts at Sligo Middle School with the production of our Spring Musical! The student director and cast were phenomenal- the choreography, singing, acting, and design were impeccable. Thank you as well to our staff who led students in this effort, Mr. Kelsey (Chorus teacher/co-director), Mr. Davis (Theater teacher/co-director), and Ms. Parks (Music teacher, sound director). The Sligo Theater Company hopes to see you at shows again next year!

This week, we celebrate ALL of our students who did an excellent job during MCAP Math and ELA state testing. Three days of morning and afternoon test sessions meant we had some extra fun on Friday. Shoutout to our team leaders for organizing and teachers for leading activities of interest for our students purely in the name of fun! Examples including vision boards, different sports, comic-con, and even sneaker cleaning! GREAT JOB ALL STUDENTS WITH TESTING!

Teaching Spotlight

This week, we highlight ALL of the fabulous teachers, counselors, support staff, and more who make our school run at a high level each and every day. This week was our celebration of Teacher Appreciation Week!! Thank you to our amazing PTSA for their support and all of the planned activities, treats, and positive moments. Teaching and working in a school is a challenging profession and is powered by a love and passion for empowering and educating young people. We are beyond thankful and appreciative of all teachers and staff that make Sligo Middle School a great place to be each and every day.

This week, we celebrate our students who are dedicating their time in extracurricular activities to pursue passions of theirs outside of the classroom. This ranges from athletics, to leadership activities, to clubs where SSL hours can be earned for service, such as Ms. Cassagnol's Environmental Club! Students weekly make our school grounds and local watershed a better and healthier place. Stay Green, Stallions!

Week of April 22nd

Teaching Spotlight

This week, we saw teachers across the building finding ways for students to have hands-on experiences and work together. Seen left is Ms. Anderson and Ms. Radushkovsky working with students about the sequence of steps/actions to take to build a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, breaking down the project into small pieces. Creativity in our instruction is alive and well to create opportunities for all students!

This week, we celebrated our Honor Roll and "On a Roll" students for their achievement and/or growth during the third quarter. We are excited about a strong fourth quarter and finish to the school year! One way our students show their academic commitment is by working hard during class time and collaborating with their peers, which was done masterfully during an Algebra lesson to solve a mystery case using quadratics.

Week of April 15th

Teaching Spotlight

This week, we saw our teachers in various spaces use real-life objects and hands-on experiences for students to use in their learning. In 6th grade science, Ms. Cassagnol brought out her extensive collection of minerals as models for students to use in experiments about mass, volume, and density. Students were excited and asking so many insightful questions about all of the "cool rocks" they were seeing!

This week, Sligo Administration was roaming the hallways and heard the beautiful sounds coming out of the band room. Concert Band, and all of our music courses, are hard at work preparing for differnet end-of-the-year performances. Practice makes perfect, and thank you for making our hallways sound amazing!

Week of April 8th

Teaching Spotlight

This week, we saw our teachers take advantage of the astronomical phenomenon of the solar eclipse as a teachable moment. This past Monday afternoon, ALL students and staff were able to view the solar eclipse safely thanks to our Science Content Specialist, Mrs. Taylor-Rubin, who worked with the National Science Foundation, to acquire them for our school free of charge. This week, Sligo 6th grade students took a field trip to the Smithsonian National Museum of American History where they learned about a variety of topics. Students were able to see primary and secondary sources in person and utilize their social studies thinking skills in action. One highlight was ¡Presente! A Latino History of the United States. A sincere THANK YOU to our 15+ parent/caregiver volunteers and our teachers for ensuring students have opportunities for real-life learning experiences.

Teaching Spotlight

This week, we saw how rain or shine, our Physical Education teachers ensure students have an opportunity to move and engage in sport each and every day. Pictured are 6th grade students mid soccer game. There were some great shots and defense all around! Students have choices in what they do in Physical Education classes and we ensure that all students have a role in participating and play through the Sport Ed Model of instruction.

This week, Sligo 7th grade students got a taste of the arts and opportunities at one of our feeder high schools, Albert Einstein HS! The "Titans on Tour" came and performed various elements of music, dance, cheer, and chorus. Their performances cement our belief in arts programming at Sligo and where it can take our students in the future. We hope to see more of our alum in future "Titans on Tour" assemblies!

Week of March 18th

Teaching Spotlight

This week, we saw excellent teaching all over the place- from our wonderful STEM educator to prepare students for STEM Night, to our Physical Education teachers for promoting activity in the staff vs. student basketball game, and much much more. So, we highlight ALL of the fabulous educators who work at Sligo whose goal is to make your child's experience great each and every day. This week, we saw Sligo students succeed in the classroom, on the court, and on the stage! Shoutout to all who participated and worked hard to prepare for STEM Night, our young athletes, our 8th grade Book Wars champions, and our Band and Orchestras for both getting superior ratings at county adjudication this year. All in all, Sligo students are growing and learning and we can't be more happy!

This week, we saw numerous teachers take advantage of the first glimpse of spring weather and utilize our outdoor learning spaces. Pictured here is Ms. Manganiello's World Studies 6 class, who took their notes and study sheets about the Etruscans and Early Rome out to the courtyard.

This week, we spotlight many of our Global Humanities 7 students who participated at the Montgomery County level National History Day Competition. Students who finished in 1st place in each category at the school level were invited. We even had one student move on to the Maryland State competition in the individual documentary category!!

Week of March 4th

Teaching Spotlight

This week, we highlight more collaborative effort in our classrooms. This time, we saw Ms. Maffeo's Spanish classes practicing their oral skills and building conversational knowledge of what they have learned in class. Our students in Spanish classes don't just learn the language as content, but also have opportunities for practice and usage in simulated real-life situations.

This week, we spotlight our hardworking 8th graders as they completed the first part of yearly MCAP state testing. This week, they completed the MISA (Maryland Integrated Science Assessment) and worked diligently. In addition, all students shared their feedback about their experiences in school both to the state via the Maryland School Survey and internally with our Sligo-specific survey. We utilize student voice to make adjustments to our instructional program! 

MCAP Testing will resume for ALL students in May for English and Math, and Social Studies for 8th grade only.

Career Day Spotlight

This week, we recognize all of AMAZING Career Day volunteers and presenters. Ranging from medical professionals, to scientists, law enforcement, to those involved in the literary arts, there was something for everyone to learn about. Our students and staff are beyond appreciative of our "guest teachers" from Career Day. So, THANK YOU to all Career Day speakers on behalf of our whole community for your time today. Special shoutout to our Career Day Committee teachers for all their preparation!

This week, we hosted several volunteers for Career Day. Our students showed off their active listening and asked stellar questions to learn and engage with our presenters from various discplines. With hands-on opportunities, kids jumped into the learning and hopefully got some great ideas and interests to pursue in their futures.

Week of February 19th

Teaching Spotlight

This week, we recognize all of the efforts for our teachers and staff to recognize, celebrate, and educate around Black History Month. From our spirit week this week, to texts covering the subject in classes, to student-generated warm ups in Ms. Simmons' Advanced English 7 class, learning was everywhere! From these questions, students joined in rich discussions and reflections that promoted awareness and made connections to the modern day.

This week, we played our final two basketball games of the year. The girls played both at home, including a double overtime thrilling victory over Newport Mill MS, with the Girls Basketball Team from Albert Einstein HS in the stands to see and cheer for their future teammates from both schools. The Sligo Girls Team ended the season undefeated at 6-0 and the Sligo Boys Team ended a strong 3-3, with a 31 point win in the last game of the season. GO STALLIONS!

Week of February 12th

Teaching Spotlight

This week, we are highlighting collaboration in the classroom! In 6th Grade Health, Mrs. Kapoor led a lesson where students were in charge of their own learning. They discussed personal wellness and the 3 components of health- physical health, social health, and mental/emotional health.  Students worked in small groups to categorize different behaviors into the 3 health components and how to achieve wellness by balancing the 3 components.  Amazing!

This week, we saw students working hard in various classes. We listened to them when they told us in school surveys they wanted to work more with their peers- and our teachers are delievering! Students have been observed asking challening questions, dialoguing with each other, and sharing positively towards a common goal. This was on display in Ms. Shuchatowitz and Mr. Hoben's Math 7 class, seen to the right.

Teaching Spotlight

This week, we spotlight our Media Center and English/ELD teachers for engaging all students in the Scholastic Book Fair. From manga to young adult drama, historical fiction to sticker books, and so much more (with a fun pen or two on the side), the book fair spreads the message from many of our teachers and staff that reading is ESSENTIAL and FUN!

This week, we spotlight the majority of our Stallion Students who made the Honor Roll or "On A Roll" lists for Quarter 2. These groups were celebrated in the cafeteria with a morning treat and some fanfare to celebrate their continued success and growth. Above 60% of students in each grade level made the Honor Roll, and we celebrated additional students who showed the most growth from Q1 to Q2 and are truly "On A Roll!"

This week, we spotlight our ELD, World Languages, and Music Department for their high engagement and participation in our schoolwide professional devleopment this week on Kagan Structures for collaborative learning (part 2). They jumped in and practiced some new strategies to implement and made plans for how students can work together more in their content areas. Kudos!

This week, we spotlight our historians, also known as students in Global Humanities 7 who presented their final National History Day projects to judges and their peers this week. It was outstanding to see such in-depth research, professionalism, and content knowledge on display. From documentary films, to exhibit boards, to performances in song, students showed off their learning in immense detail!

Week of January 22nd

Teaching Spotlight

This week, we found many Sligo teachers putting our in-house professional development on collaborative learning structures to use! Once such example was in French class, where student "captains" asked questions at their tables and students recorded responses on whiteboards while other students were able to provide feedback. Then, the roles changed so all could participate equitably.

This week, we spotlight our future Stallion engineers and STEM explorers! 6th graders in the elective rotation participate in one quarter of Coding and Game Development. One of the students' favorite projects is building robots where, of course, they must race! This week, students worked hard to ensure their robots were primed for success, programming and all.

Teaching Spotlight

This week, even though we were only in the building for one day, teaching and learning were all over! This time, we saw it on the court, as we hosted our first home basketball game. Both the boys' and girls' teams were victorious! Effective teaching takes many forms, including coaching! Thank you to our teacher/coaches for basketball, Mr. Mohamud and Mr. Davis.

Teaching Spotlight

This week, while walking the hallways, we came across the Global Humanities 7 classes, taught by Ms. Chichester, working diligently on the final steps of their National History Day projects. Ms. Chichester leads students through a dense research project over many weeks, culminating in student presentations at the National History Day at Sligo on February 1st. Seeing such collaboration, attention to detail, and dedication to learning was a joy!

This week, we spotlight our FUTURE Stallion Students! Our Sligo team went out to Glen Haven, Flora Singer, and Woodlin Elementary Schools to talk about what middle school will be like and sign up for elective classes. The excitement, inquisitive questions, and positive energy in room made us excited to welcome them next year!

Week of January 1st

Teaching Spotlight

This week, Algebra I students participated in a uniquely fun activity to learn about expotential growth and decay equations. Students wrote an equation on a headband and played an interactive game where they had to ask questions. Students wrote scripts to share that included their starting point and rate of change. Math takes many forms here at Sligo, thank you to Ms. Lubitz for implementing such an interactive learning opportunity!

This week, many students were nervous (or excited) about dissections in science class! 7th grade students participated in a lab dissecting cow eyes this past Friday. Many found it fun, challenging, and maybe a little slimey. However, we celebrate all students for trying something new and taking responsible academic risks for something out of their comfort zones in the name of learning about biology! Go Stallion Learners!

Week of December 18th

Teaching Spotlight

This week, we shine a light on laboratory science experiments that students engage in on a frequent basis during their science classes. In 7th grade science on Tuesday, students made hypotheses about which joints in the human body would allow for a paper ball to be thrown the farthest (wrist, elbow, shoulder, etc.). Students tested their hypotheses in the hallway in groups. Thank you Mr. Hansen for encouraging collaborative lab work and making it fun!

This week, we had our annual Battle of the Classes in PE class- and a spirit week to encourage friendly competition and school spirit. We are always trying to create engaging and fun activities for students to make them excited to come to school. Throughout the week, students participated in various spirit activities- from "Maryland Monday" to holiday color days and more! Our students showed their spirit well!!

Teaching Spotlight

Each month, Sligo MS teachers engage in professional learning created in-house by our Staff Development Teacher, Ms. Jackson. As a former English Content Specialist, she knows how to lead our teachers in their own learning and focus on their continuous improvement. This month, teachers learned about Kagan Learning Structures to add more collaboration in lessons, while keeping all students accountable for their work. These new strategies are coming to a classroom near you!

This week, our fantastic band, orchestra, and choral music students took to the stage (literally in the spotlight) at this year's Winter Concert. The performances were outstanding and showed off their hard work. Thank you to all who attended- it was a pretty full house- and the support you showed our students makes a profound impact!

Erin Yun, an author whose Pippa Park series focuses on Asian American and Pacific Islanders main characters, spoke with students from English classes. Shoutout to our amazing Media Specialist, Ms. Natale, and our Media Assistant, Ms. Henley, for the work behind bringing these engaging experiences to our students!

This week, our teachers became students this week! At our monthly staff meeting, we focused on staff wellness and engaging activities led by our own staff. From athletics to yoga, and art to drum circles, many of our staff became students in a fun subject of their choosing. As educators, we are always learning and seeking new knowledge!

This week, we had a special guest teacher in World Studies! We thank a parent volunteer for coming to 6th Grade Global Humanities classes this week and speaking about their role as a diplomat and work with the United Nations. A fantastic connection to a further Model United Nations simulations students will work on later this year. Thank you to our community members for sharing their expertise!

This week, we celebrate the collaboration and teamwork seen by our teachers and families/caregivers at our annual Parent-Teacher Conferences this past Monday. Our teachers were excited to meet you (or see you again) and discuss your student's progress this year. Parents and caregivers have an essential role in their students success and we value your partnership! (Now, off to a well-deserved Thanksgiving Break!)

This week, our students participated in the annual Staff vs. Students Volleyball Game, a pre-Thanksgiving break tradition. Teams worked together well to try and take down the undefeated Stallion staff, yet were once again the second place finishers. Shoutout to all our teacher and staff who participated, and the PE/Health Department for organizing fun opportunities for students!

This week, our teaching and learning extended to parents and caregivers. At our monthly Latino Parent Partnership meeting, school staff (Ms. Burgos, Ms. Ferman, and Mr. Imamura) presented information about school safety, conflict resolution, and upcoming parent-teacher conferences. Our partners at Identity also presented on student mental health.

This week, our 7th grade Stallions attended their first field trip this year to the Baltimore Aquarium. Students explored multiple exhibits and were able to have lunch with their peers. Experiential learning is paramount to student success (and wellbeing) and our 7th grade students did a great job! Shoutout to their teachers and chaperones, too!

This week, our Counseling Department crafted a series of daily themes, lunch time events, and more for both staff and students in recognition of Mental Health Awareness Week here at Sligo. We thank our amazing school counselors, social worker, and counseling office secretary for all their dedication and care for our students.

This week, our Stallion actors and actresses took to the stage (theater in the round, at that) in two stellar performances of "Alienated," our fall play. The students were engrossed in their characters, showed off their performance abilities, and had the crowd laughing throughout. This week, the spotlight shines on our PE/Health Department and our AMAZING PTSA for a fantastic Fitness Fun Day this week on Friday. Our PE/Health teachers promote physical fitness and wellness every day, but a special emphasis on this day full of activities outdoors!

Outdoor Education is a highlight of the school year for many, and we are so pleased with our students and their behavior and participation overall!

This week, the spotlight shines on the laboratory experiences our students experience frequently in science class, such as the studying why the leaves change color in the fall through a chromatography lab. This week, the spotlight shines on ALL our teachers, but specifically on Ms. Jackson, our Staff Development Teacher, and members of our Instructional Leadership Team, who implemented professional development on the MCPS Equitable Teaching and Learning Framework, support for our Emerging Multilingual Students, and connected equity work to our school improvement plan. Teachers also individually reviewed student voice data.

This week, our students participated in several collaborative activities to bolster their learning. One such example is a "thrash out," where students choose one side of an argument and provide evidence and reasoning to prove their argument is right! Ms. Chichester arranged a thrash out in Global Humanities 7 this week about how should the Aztec Empire be remembered.

This week, the spotlight shines on the creative ideas our teachers come up with to make lessons more engaging, such as in Ms. Vaughn and Mr. Hoben's Math 7 class, where unit rate and what are "better buys" were studied using Jenga and group work! We are ALL math people and math is everywhere, even in games!

This week, the spotlight shines on our amazing Counseling Department! Each year, our school counselors conduct lessons in the classroom on a variety of topics. This week, they presented on Anti-Bullying in all world studies classes in each grade. Thank you Mr. Chambers, Mr. Cherif, and Mrs. Bacon!

This week, our 6th grade science classes conducted the popular "Oh Deer" simulation to learn about the carrying capacity and limited resource use in different ecosystems. The tennis courts were an imaginative field for our "deer" to participate in the simulation.

Teaching Spotlight

This week, the spotlight shines on all the fun things our teachers do to ensure students learn and have fun at the same time. Our choral music teacher, Mr. Kelsey, pulled out some costume items for fun in Chorus 1 class this week.

This week, our SCB (School Community Based Program) students learned about Leonardo da Vinci, then tried their hand out at making a class painting. If you ask us, it's museum quality!

Teaching Spotlight

This week, we highlight student engagement in our World Languages classes. Madame Della, our French teacher, leads students in song to learn the counting basics.  Our teachers often provide creative ways for students to master new concepts in class. 

Student Spotlight

At the beginning of each quarter in Physical Education classes, students complete their fitness testing. In the famous "pacer test" today, some students made signs cheering on their classmates with their Chromebooks! We love the encouragement and team spirit!

While we have SEVERAL opportunities to shine some light on our teachers this week, please see some of our staff working to beautify our Outdoor Classroom! Thank you to Ms. Cassagnol for your hard work on this amazing space for our students to learn outdoors. 

Student Spotlight

Students in Mr. Gordon's math class were asked to fill in the blank circles so that each side had the same sum. Students then worked together to discuss their thinking, and explain why their strategy was a potential solution.

Teaching Spotlight

We welcomed back our Sligo staff for Pre-Service this week! All staff engaged in professional learning, classroom set-up, and much more! Shoutout to the PTSA for a delicious lunch on Wednesday. We are ready to receive all of our amazing stallion students on Monday!

It was amazing to see the smiling faces and positive energy of our incoming 6th graders and new 7th and 8th graders at New Student Orientation this past Thursday!
