Trojan community -

This coming Friday, September 1st, the fall sports season begins at Gaithersburg High School with our first home football game. Below is some important, non-negotiable information related to students attending high school sporting events:

- Only students enrolled at the two competing teams may attend the high school event.  IF a student from another high school wishes to attend s/he must be accompanied by a paying adult.

- All high school students attending must present to staff their School ID (or show staff their StudentVue account with their picture).

- All students in grades K-8 may only attend high school sporting events with a paid adult. Unaccompanied grade K-8 students will not be permitted to enter the high school events.

- The paying adult accompanying the grades K-8 student to the game must remain at the game for the entirety.

- Adults will be thoroughly responsible for the behavior of your grade K-8 child while at the event.

- All students attending athletic events are expected to follow the MCPS Student Code of Conduct and behavior properly at the high school events.  All spectators will also follow the rules and responsibilities set forth by the MCPS Department of Athletics.

- Inappropriate behaviors will result in the removal of the student and/or spectator from the event - and may result in the inability of that person to attend subsequent games.

Please visit the MCPS Department of Athletics website below for more information on attending high school sporting events:  https://www2.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/departments/athletics

STUDENT PARKING - 1ST SEMESTER

Beginning Monday, August 15 2022, Juniors and Seniors will have the opportunity to apply for the FY 23 First Semester Student Parking Permit which is valid from August 29, 2022 through January 27, 2023.  All students must have a parking permit to park on the premises the first day of school.  Students will have the opportunity to pick up their permit next week after receiving notification of approval. There will be another opportunity in January of 2023 to apply for the FY 23 Second Semester Student Parking Permit.

Gaithersburg High School has 119 possible Student Parking Spaces (69 on site at GHS and 50 at Bohrer Park).  Student Parking Spaces are assigned on a “first come, first served” basis.   Online payment of $39.00 ($37.50 permit + fee) per semester is required at the end of the application process after approval is given.

Students must meet ALL of the following core criteria to be approved for a student parking permit:

-          Classified as a senior (12th grade) or junior (11th grade) according to MCPS criteria

-          Has no more than three (3) unexcused absences in any class, from the prior or current semester

-          Has no outstanding financial obligations (email Mrs. Hudson to check at debra_j_hudson@mcpsmd.org)

-          Has a record of satisfactory behavior

-     Past GPA history may be considered

Students must also meet ONE OR MORE of the following additional criteria:

-          Participation in a school-sponsored, after-school activity that meets a minimum of three (3) times per week

-          Attend an approved school or program requiring private transportation

-          Unusual or imperative need

The above criteria must be met at the time the application is submitted and must be maintained throughout the semester in order for the student to retain the parking permit.  Any violation may result in the revocation of the permit.

To begin the FY 23 Student Parking Permit Process, Students or Parents should fill out the FY 23 Student Parking Permit Approval Form

If the student is approved for a parking permit, the Student and Parent will receive an email from Mrs. Debra Hudson, the School Financial Specialist, with additional instructions regarding what information is required to complete the Student Parking Permit application process.

If the student is NOT approved for a parking permit, Mrs. Hudson will also communicate that information to the Student and Parent with an explanation why the student was not approved.

If you have any questions regarding this process, please reach out to School Business Administrator, Patricia_E_Donner@mcpsmd.org with questions.

After-Prom Volunteers Needed

Trojan families -

A message from our PTSA and After-Prom Committee:

It is time to volunteer to help out with the 2022 PTSA  After Prom Event!

To make this fun event successful we need the help of many people.  We welcome the parents of younger students to also help out and be a part of this yearly tradition so that you can learn the ropes as you become the parents of the older students!

There are opportunities to help out at all of the activities throughout the night, to provide one time food pick ups and drop offs from various restaurants on the evening of the event, donate food/drinks on the day of the event or drop them off at a designated location the week before the event, or help to set up and decorate the gym during the evening before the event starts.

Please click on the following link to access the Sign Up Genius:  https://www.signupgenius.com/go/8050f49afa6283-2022

Thank you for all your help!

Welcome Principal Intern Mr. Chris Ascienzo for ’22-’23 SY

Trojan community –

The purpose of this email (and this official letter to the community) is to share information about changes to our Gaithersburg High School (GHS) administrative team for the upcoming 2022-2023 school year.

Beginning July 1st, 2022, Gaithersburg High School will be receiving a principal intern, Mr. Christopher Ascienzo, currently an assistant principal at Northwest High School.  Principal interns are experienced administrators who are selected to begin a year of preparation for the principalship.  Principal interns perform many of the duties of an assistant principal, while simultaneously shadowing the current school principal in preparation for their future role as a school system leader.  The opportunity for Mr. Ascienzo to move on to this final stage of preparation for the principalship is a celebration, and we commend him on his selection to this new position.  I know you join me in sharing our appreciation for the dedication and commitment Mr. Ascienzo has demonstrated and shown to the Northwest High School community, and will also help me in welcoming Chris to our Trojan family.

With the arrival of Mr. Ascienzo, Ms. Heidi Vermillion, GHS assistant principal for the past four years, will be transferring her skills and expertise to another experience in the Montgomery County Public School system. We have greatly appreciated her contributions in contributing to the instructional and operational programs at GHS. She has been an invaluable member of our school leadership team, and we know she will be making similar contributions in her new role.

Sincerely,

Cary Dimmick, Principal

Comunidad troyano –

Sinceramente,

Cary Dimmick, Director

NO BALLOONS PERMITTED AT GHS

Trojan community -

We are seeing an increase in balloons coming into Gaithersburg High School to celebrate birthdays and special occasions. Before the upcoming Valentine’s Holiday, we need to share with students and families…

We cannot permit balloons in schools for a variety of reasons, the two most pertinent are (1) if a balloon “escapes” and floats to the ceiling – and they make contact with a sprinkler head – they can set off the fire sprinkler system.  Additionally, (2) we have a number of students with auditory sensory issues, and IF a balloon pops, the loud sound could result in the triggering of anxiety, panic attacks or a PTSD episode.

We need your assistance in enforcing this expectation. There are multiple ways to celebrate special occasions…we just cannot permit balloons to be part of these celebrations.

Thanks for your understanding.  Let me know if you have any questions.

Cary Dimmick

comunidad troyana -

COMMUNITY MESSAGE - ATHLETICS

Trojan community -

This email is to bring attention to the community message sent to all MCPS families yesterday about possible revisions to the operations plan for high school athletic events:

The local high school Athletics Programs in MCPS are designed to support and enhance the academic experience for our students and help build school and community spirit. Each week, our students participate in and attend hundreds of athletic contests, and they almost always demonstrate the respect and sportsmanship that we expect.

Recently, there have been reports of altercations and incidences of disrespectful behavior at some of our contests. While these incidents involve a small number of students, they are entirely unacceptable and require us to consider some changes to ensure the safety and security of students, staff, and community members, especially at events where large crowds are expected.

These changes may include:

- Increasing the presence of police officers;

- Increasing the number of MCPS security personnel, as well as school and central office administrative staff;

- Enhancing lighting where necessary;

- Possibly limiting the number of attendees, rescheduling events to weekend days, and/or changing event start times;

- Requiring student IDs to attend and requiring elementary and middle school students to be accompanied by a parent or guardian; and

- Potentially closing concession stands.

MCPS and county leadership will review each large event to determine the necessary safety measures and those will be communicated by the school. It is our hope that these measures will help to eliminate any future problems at athletic events. As a reminder, students can and will face disciplinary action as a result of poor or unsafe behavior at school events, including athletic contests.

MCPS Athletics’ R.A.I.S.E. core values teach and reinforce respect and sportsmanship, academic excellence, integrity and character, spirited and safe competition, and equity and access. It is the responsibility of all of us to model appropriate behavior from students and adults who attend events at MCPS schools. We are reinforcing this message to our students at school and ask that you remind your children of these expectations before they attend any MCPS event.

Should there be a need at GHS to revise our current practices in any way, we will communicate that to you.

Please continue to attend the fall athletic events to help our student-athletes close out the fall season with the most positive support we can provide them.

Our GHS Student Activities can be found HERE

Please see the MCPS Community Message HERE.

Cary Dimmick, Principal

Comunidad troyana -

- Incrementar la presencia de agentes de policía;

- Aumentar la cantidad de personal de seguridad de MCPS, así como personal administrativo de la escuela y la oficina central;

- Mejora de la iluminación cuando sea necesario;

- Posiblemente limitar el número de asistentes, reprogramar eventos para los días de fin de semana y / o cambiar las horas de inicio de los eventos;

Community Letter from MCPS RE: Lead in Drinking Water

GHS Community -

Attached is a letter from MCPS regarding lead that was found in the drinking water at GHS during their routine, three-year cycle, checks.

As part of the Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) Drinking Water Testing

Program, testing has been completed at your school, and one or more drinking water outlets contained lead concentrations at or above the Montgomery County Council Action Level (AL) of 5 parts per billion (ppb).

A detailed report is available on the MCPS Drinking Water Testing Program website at the following link:

http://www.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/departments/facilities/maintenance/services/water.aspx

Adhering to the Maryland Department of the Environment regulations, the outlets with elevated lead concentrations were removed from service, and a remediation plan will be implemented for these outlets. Upon completion of the remediation, the outlets will be retested to verify that remediation measures were effective.

Please see this letter for more detail.

Attention GHS Community:

New IN-PERSON Bell Schedule

Due to limitations in the MCPS Department of Transportation, our high school busses must leave our GHS parking lot by 2:40 pm.  To allow our students time to access their busses, we will be changing our IN-PERSON schedule to reflect a 2:30 pm dismissal time.

NOTE: The virtual schedule will remain the same.

To accommodate this new mandate, we have reduced the lunch/wellness time by 10 minutes – and adjusted the afternoon classes accordingly.

Please see the new schedule HERE.  This will become effective on Wednesday, April 14th.

COVID-19 testing will begin at Gaithersburg High School in April

Trojan community:

This email is to inform you that COVID-19 testing will begin at Gaithersburg High School sometime in the upcoming weeks. The designated dates have not been finalized.

We must all do our part to prevent the transmission of the COVID-19 virus in our schools. This includes participating in school-provided COVID-19 testing to identify cases where the in-person student or staff member may not be showing symptoms.

MCPS families were notified about this new effort February and March. Free tests will be provided for all in-person students and staff on a weekly basis.

Each swab will be placed in a common tube for that classroom or group and sent off to a central testing laboratory. The test detects whether the virus that causes COVID-19 is present in that pooled sample. Schools will receive results within 2-3 days.

A consent form is attached to this message. NOTE:  If you do not complete the consent form, your child will not be able to participate in testing. The consent for COVID pool testing is done 1 time, and students will participate weekly. (The 1-time consent form is not to be confused with weekly MCPS attestation practice.) Consent forms should be printed, signed, and brought to the Main Office.

Please watch this video to learn about MCPS COVID Pool Testing.

Key Information to Note About the Test:

- As we begin additional in person learning, MCPS will begin to put in place a schedule of weekly testing at MCPS schools

- Pooling is a method that combines test samples from several individuals into a single specimen to test

- Parents should provide consent for students to participate. See attached.

- Anyone with a positive COVID test in the last 3 months should not participate

Key Information to Note About the Process:

- For most age groups, students will be collecting their own swabs and follow instructions from teachers

- MCPS health and safety protocols will be maintained during the COVID-19 pool testing

Key Information to Note About the Results:

- Pooled classroom results apply to that group; no individual identifiers or results will be available

- The school will receive the pooled results and take appropriate action, as necessary in the event of a positive pool result.

Additionally, a graphic and the form is available online at:

Half-Day Secondary Schedule for Inauguration Day, January 20, 2021

Trojan community –

On Monday, January 18th, there will be no school, as we celebrate the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday.  Additionally, on Wednesday, January 20th, the United States Presidential Inauguration will be held mid-day.

Typically on weeks with holidays, the virtual Wednesday is adjusted to an A schedule in an effort to allow for four full instructional days.  Given that next Wednesday is a historic day and an opportunity for students to learn and witness the democratic process in real time, the Wednesday schedule will be adjusted as follows:

Schedule for Wednesday, January 20, 2021- A Day

  9:00a -  9:30a       Period 1

  9:40a -10:10a       Period 2

10:20a -10:50a       Period 3

11:00a -11:30p       Period 4

11:30a -  1:30p       Extended Lunch and Opportunity for Inauguration Viewing

  1:30p -  2:30p       Asynchronous Learning

The afternoon of the 20th will now be an asynchronous day for students.  This time may be used for students to process and reflect on the inauguration with their families or staff.

If students may need to discuss the inauguration events with a staff member for support, school leadership will be available from 1:30-2:30 p.m. to engage students in a reflective discussion. The Zoom link is HERE.  The Meeting ID: 895 7165 2071 and Passcode: 014966.  Or call in at 301-715-8592 (same meeting ID and passcode for virtual.).

Social Studies teachers will be using inauguration resources to teach students about the electoral process and the inauguration prior to Wednesday, January 20th.

Mr. Cary Dimmick

Principal

Comunidad troyana -

Trojan community –

As the nation and our children read, hear and watch about the riots that occurred at the U.S. Capitol building yesterday, we are reminded just how important it is for us to teach about and model civility and respect for our democracy. As we work to understand the actions of yesterday, and to take the appropriate steps to heal and move forward as a nation, we know that we will need to work together and support each other.  As adults, we must always remember that our children are watching and looking to us as role models. How we respond in the days ahead will have a significant impact on our community.

Over the next few days, school counselors, administrators and teachers will be available to support our GHS students. If needed, students can make an appointment with their school counselor by visiting the counseling webpage HERE.  Administrators are also available to meet with students virtually or by phone.  We are also encouraging our Trojan parents/guardians to talk with their children about these issues - and have provided a list of resources on our GHS Website (News and Announcements).

We care deeply about our students and are always here for them as we continue to work through these trying times.

Sincerely,

Cary Dimmick, Principal

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Comunidad troyana -

Sinceramente,

Cary Dimmick, Directora

URGENT:  Upload your Individual Portraits for the 2021 Yearbook by January 21st!

Trojans –

With the absence of portrait day this year, the Gaithersburg High School yearbook staff is asking each 9th, 10th and  11th grade student to upload their own portrait photo for use in this year’s yearbook. Seniors, if you didn’t get a senior portrait, you can upload your own portrait photo as well.  Students, just choose an appropriate portrait photo from their camera roll (or take one on the spot) and upload it through www.ybkplus.com .

Here's How…

Please note, we want to keep our portraits appropriate for the yearbook, so the yearbook staff reserves the right to reject any photo that does not accurately represent the student identified, does not follow proper student dress code and/or does not meet publications standards.

Don’t delay! We want to include every student’s portrait in the book.  Due to publishing deadlines, we need all portraits uploaded to www.ybkplus.com by January 19th 2021!

Thanks for your help!   We’re working hard on creating a yearbook that captures this historic school year.  If you haven’t already ordered yours, you can do so at www.jostensyearbooks.com

If you have any questions, please contact Ms. Keres at Nilda_Keres@mcpsmd.org

(Vea a continuación el mensaje en español)

Trojan students and families –

Montgomery County Public Schools is committed to ensuring our students are equipped with the information needed to be able to recognize signs of bullying/cyber bullying, harassment (including sexual harassment), hate-bias incidents, hazing, intimidation, and student gender norms.  An online student training lesson, entitled “Culture of Respect,” has been developed for students in grades 6 through 12.  This online training lesson provides critical information that will help students better recognize the signs of inappropriate behaviors, including the various ways to report alleged/concerning incidents.  The training includes a student survey that will provide school leaders with valuable data to assess the current culture and climate of respect at their schools and determine potential next steps to plan for improvements.  The training should take approximately 30 minutes to complete and will be accessible to all students via their myMCPS Classroom homepage beginning December 1, 2020.  Students are asked to complete the training by January 29, 2021.

The official letter from GHS can be found HERE.  If you have any questions or concerns about the topics that will be covered, please contact me, or your child’s school counselor.

° a 12. ° grado. Also, please note that there is NO fee to have a photo taken to ONLY be in the yearbook.  If this is want you want, choose the BASIC package and do not pay any fees online.  Just tell the photographer that you only want the yearbook photo.
