Dr. Michael T. Johnson is the Associate Dean for Undergraduate Education and Student Success at the University of Kentucky Pigman College of Engineering, as well as a full professor in the UK Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. Dr. Johnson received his Ph.D. in ECE from Purdue University in 2000, with a research focus in the area of automatic speech recognition. He also holds an M.S.E.E. degree from the University of Texas at San Antonio and B.S. degrees in both Computer Science Engineering and Engineering with Electrical Concentration from LeTourneau University in Longview, TX. In addition to his current role, Dr. Johnson’s leadership experience includes serving as Department Chair of UK ECE from 2016-23, as the President of the Southeast ECE Department Heads Association in 2021-22, as the Chair of the Board of Graduate Studies at Marquette University from 2012-2016, as the Director of Graduate Studies for the Marquette EECE Department from 2009-12, and also as a Senior Visiting Professor at Tsinghua University in Beijing China in 2008-09 and 2014-15. Prior to earning his PhD, Dr. Johnson worked as a design engineer and engineering manager in the telecommunications industry for 6 years. Dr. Johnson’s primary research area is speech and signal processing, with interests in articulatory kinematics, bioacoustics, machine learning, and nonlinear signal processing. His research work includes acoustic-to-articulatory inversion with applications to computer aided pronunciation training as well as the application of speech recognition technology to the field of animal bioacoustics. He is an active author, reviewer, and editor in the area of speech and signal processing and distinguished member of several professional societies in his field. In addition, Dr. Johnson has served as an expert witness on multiple high-profile patent litigation cases in the area of consumer voice and audio processing systems.
