ReceiptHog review:

Receipt Hog lets you earn rewards for sharing your paper or digital receipts through the app, no matter where you shop and what you buy. Although the rewards are negligible, the effort involved in claiming rewards is also minimal.

How it works

If you shop in-store, use your camera to upload the receipt. If you shop online, you can connect your loyalty accounts or your email to the app and earn cash back for all your online purchases.

You can also get bonus rewards for performing other online tasks like taking surveys, adding the Chrome extension on your desktop or laptop computer’s browser, or connecting your Receipt Hog account with your Amazon account and primary email address.

How many coins?

How many coins do you get for each of these activities? With receipts, the number of coins you get will depend on how much you spent. You’ll get 5 coins for retail receipts worth less than $10 and up to 20 coins for receipts that show you spent $100 or more. Each receipt also gets you entered into a drawing where you could potentially win up to 5,000 coins. With everything else, the number of coins is spelled out in advance. But, don’t expect to get rich.

What’s that worth?

The catch here is that while you get some “coins” for a wide array of activities, the coins aren’t worth much. For instance, you get 50 coins for signing up and at least 10 coins for uploading a receipt, but your coins are worth about a half-cent each. So, those two activities get you a whopping 30 cents. If you let your coins accumulate, you get a slightly better value, however.

To be specific, the site says:

  • 1,000 coins = $5
  • 2,900 coins = $15
  • 4,300 coins = $25
  • 6,500 coins = $40

ReceiptHog payments can be redeemed once you’ve accumulated 1,000 coins or more. Redemption options include PayPal and Amazon e-gift cards.

Limits

You can only upload 3 receipts per retailer, per day. And you must upload receipts within 14 days of purchase for them to be eligible for rewards.

ReceiptHog also will only let you accumulate 100 coins per week. If you have more receipts than that, you simply get additional entries into the site’s monthly sweepstakes. In other words, it will take you at least two months to earn $5, unless you win a sweepstakes.

Recommendations

That said, the site is much like using a rewards card for purchases that you’re already making. Snapping a photo of your receipt should take no more than a few seconds and you can use that same receipt to earn rewards with other sites, including Fetch Rewards and ReceiptPal.

Don’t delay, however. Most of these sites only give you 10 days to two weeks to upload receipts. After that, the receipts will be rejected for being too old. ReceiptHog gives you 14 days to upload receipts. After that, they’re rejected for being too old.

What their users say (from the Apple App Store)

“This app does work somewhat better than some of the other receipt reward apps I’ve encountered. I just wish the contact method was more reliable. The updates that add new features is nice, but being able to actually speak with someone about features that do not work, would be even better.”

“Overall, it’s free money and I can’t complain about that. But unless you are using in conjunction with multiple other apps, it might not be worth it to wait months just to earn a few bucks.  I do like the slots, surveys and levels because there’s that element of surprise when you never know if you’re going to unexpectedly earn more. But it doesn’t happen often. Honestly, your chances of actually winning a sweepstakes are so small and it would be much more beneficial to be awarded coins instead.”

“I’m not collecting Maseratis because of this app, but it’s been fun collecting little pretend gold coins for real-life gift cards. And you don’t even have to do it every day. You have a 2-week window if you’re really busy.”
