Erica was born in Amsterdam as the middle of three children. After school, while the country was recovering from the Second World War, she studied at the Fine Arts School in Amsterdam, nowadays known as the Gerrit Rietveld Academy. From there she moved in the beginning of the 1950s to the town of Enschede, where she started as a designer in the flourishing textile manufacturing industry. There she had a successful career by exploiting her knowledge of both design and weaving techniques. Ten years later she moved back to Amsterdam (Amstelveen) where her two sons were born. However, her affection for technical weaving only increased during the years. Ever bigger and more complex looms entered the house. She loved to teach, private as well as professional, in weaving techniques and did so all around the world. Her last book 'Weaving on 3 shafts' (2017) was therefore also published in English and copies found there ways to weavers in many countries. Also, she adopted all benefits of modern communications by laptop, tablet and mobile phone and kept doing so until her last days. She died 88 years old among her closest family.
