The Boogies and the Woogies is a work of children's fiction in the picture book and social issues subgenres. It is intended for young children who are accompanied readers or just reaching independent reading age and was penned and illustrated by author Marianne Reed. In this charming story, we are introduced to two groups of creatures, the Boogies and the Woogies of the book’s title, and we immediately find them arguing about their differing opinions. What transpires is a tale of how to settle our differences peacefully and constructively, and learn that we’re not that different at all really below the surface.

Love, respect, and finding common ground are the key themes of this insightful and highly engaging picture book, and I think that is a wonderful message to send to the youngest generation right now, especially in a world of such divisive rhetoric. There are plenty of adults who would benefit from the simple and succinct lessons that this book teaches too! Author Marianne Reed pitches the timing, ideas, and complexity of the social issues at just the right level for all kinds of readers to take something constructive away from them, and the quality of the illustrations makes the characters charming and engaging to see, especially when they’re dancing! I also really enjoyed the narrative style and the imagery and metaphors at play to help younger readers make sense of the ideas. Overall, I would highly recommend The Boogies and the Woogies as a positive and upbeat bedtime book for all children.
