The alarming increase in student mental health concerns creates a barrier to learning and is making teaching unsustainable as educators address these issues in the absence of adequate mental health supports to meet students’ needs.

But we can make a difference in our children’s wellbeing and teacher sustainability today. Join us in advocating for additional mental health staff and teammate training that help our children learn, our teachers teach, and our school communities thrive.

Should schools have to choose between their students’ well-being and safety, and the resources needed for their learning?

We don’t think so. That’s why we’re calling on policymakers to identify and reallocate more resources to support students’ mental health.

The pandemic took a devastating toll on children’s mental health and exacerbated trauma that already existing in under-resourced communities.

California’s mental health systems have been exhausted, leading to dangerously long wait times for therapeutic services.

Teachers are exhausted too. They simply don’t have enough support to respond to students’ trauma and the resulting behaviors in the classroom.

We can and must do better for our students, their families, and our entire school communities.

Schools with counseling and social-emotional learning programs have higher academic achievement, lower dropout rates, and fewer classroom disturbances.

And schools are physically safer when students feel like they belong, and receive the support they need.

If we don’t care for students’ evolving needs, we will see negative impacts on our state for generations to come.

We need resources for our schools that meet the challenge of today.

Join us in advocating for additional mental health staff and teammate training that help our children learn, our teachers teach, and our school communities thrive.
