House Delivers Article of Impeachment to the Senate
On Monday, the House transmitted the Article of Impeachment for Donald Trump to the Senate. As President, he incited a violent insurrection against our democracy. He charged up a violent mob to attack the Capitol to stop the Congress from fulfilling our Constitutional duty to count the electoral ballots that have duly elected the next President and Vice President of the United States. The mob violently attacked law enforcement and smashed its way into the Capitol, calling for the hanging of the Vice President and hunting Members of Congress. Five Americans died following this violent attack and nearly 140 police officers were injured – and without law enforcement's heroism, the attack could have been even worse.

No one is above the law, and the former President must be tried and convicted by the Senate to ensure that no future president ever thinks they can do the same thing and get away with it. A president must be held accountable from their first day in office until their last day in office. If a president knows he can violate the Constitution at the end of their term and get away with it, it is an invitation to dangerous abuses of power.

• It has always been the case that former officials can be impeached and tried – in fact that has been the standard practice in the United States Senate since the very earliest Congresses – and it would be a dangerous precedent if we were to depart from that practice.
• The text of the Constitution makes clear that removal is not the only reason to impeach but separately allows for disqualification from holding federal office so that our democracy may be protected from particularly dangerous former officials who reject free and fair elections.
• A President does not get a constitutional freebie so long as the wrongdoing, no matter how grave, is committed near the end of their term – especially when efforts to hold onto power and remain in office against the will of the people are most likely to happen at the end of a term, not the beginning.

The House of Representatives upheld its duty to support and defend the Constitution and voted to impeach Trump. Our Impeachment Managers continue to work preparing the strongest case for the impeachment trial in the Senate.

Reversing Trump's Transgender Service Ban
On Monday, President Biden signed an Executive Order directing agencies to reverse the transgender military ban and immediately prohibit involuntary separations, discharges and denials of reenlistment or continuation of service on the basis of gender identity or under circumstances relating to gender identity. It was a day of great hope and progress for thousands of heroes in our military and indeed for our entire country, as the transgender ban is thrown into the trashbin of history. America is restoring our proud pledge: that no one with the strength and bravery to serve in the U.S. military should be turned away because of who they are.

The transgender ban was a cruel and arbitrary decision designed to humiliate transgender Americans who have stepped forward to serve our country. The Biden-Harris Administration and Congress will continue to reverse this and other discriminatory actions that weaken our military readiness and betray our core American values.

Democrats' defense strategy will be dictated by the priorities of security, stability, peace and American values – not the hate and prejudice that defined the previous presidency.
