Early Faculty/Independent Scholar Award

Eligibility and Application Information

You must be registered on the PCA site and be an active, paid member for the current year at the time you submit your application. There are no exceptions.

Required materials and evaluation criteria should include the following items. Note that the application itself (bullets 2 – 4) should be no longer than 750 words.

  • Abstract of presentation which has been accepted by the area chairs.
  • A statement about the thesis and scope of the presentation.
  • A brief discussion about the extent to which the presentation contributes to the study of Popular Culture or American Culture.
  • A statement about how this presentation will contribute to the applicant’s professional goals.
  • An abbreviated CV.*

*Award applications will not require a full CV, but the applicant should include information about education, experience, employment, and accomplishments. 

CRITERIA FOR EVALUATION

Applications will be evaluated on:

  • The quality of the proposal’s thesis and scope.
  • The extent to which the paper reflects on and contributes to the Science Fiction and Fantasy Area the PCA.
  • The extent to which the presentation reflects the applicant’s future scholarly and professional goals.

These awards are for $250 USD, and should be considered supplemental for presenting at the national conference. The award is given after the presentation of the winner’s paper at the conference. Applicants should make financial arrangements to attend and present even if an award is not awarded.

REMEMBER THAT YOU HAVE TO PAY YOUR  MEMBERSHIP FEES FOR THE CURRENT YEAR IF YOU WANT TO BE CONSIDERED FOR AN AWARD.

This award is for applicants who do NOT hold faculty rank, i.e., they should be considered adjunct faculty (only) or independent scholars. Applications are due February 28, 2024.
