Fresh and local

We are working to make farmers' markets accessible to low-income families in the Linn and Benton counties.

Background

One of the most difficult issues to address in a local food system is how to make fresh, local food affordable for low income community members and still provide an adequate income to our local food producers so that they stay in business. Small scale farmers depend on farmers’ markets to sell their produce. Low income people depend on the federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) to feed their families. Fresh fruits and vegetables are necessary for good health, but more expensive than many processed foods of lower nutritional value. Fresh and Local First 501(c)3 was formed to raise money to increase the value of SNAP at farmers’ markets in Linn and Benton counties.

our mission

Our mission is to make fresh, local food the first choice for all residents of Benton and Linn counties. Fresh fruits and vegetables are necessary for good health, but more expensive than many processed foods of lower nutritional value. We aim to incentivize low income residents to shop at local farmers' markets by doubling the value of their SNAP benefits up to ten dollars.
