CDC Office and LocationA research opportunity is currently available with the Division of Global Migration and Quarantine (DGMQ) within the National Center for Emerging and Zoonotic Infectious Diseases (NCEZID) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in San Diego, California.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Division of Global Migration and Quarantine (DGMQ) works to reduce morbidity and mortality among immigrants, refugees, travelers, expatriates, and other globally mobile populations, and to prevent the introduction, transmission, and spread of communicable diseases through regulation, science, research, preparedness, and response. The U.S.-Mexico Unit (USMU) within DGMQ specifically works to improve and promote the health of bi-national migrant and other mobile populations and prevent the spread of diseases of public health importance in the North American region through science, partnerships, policy preparedness and response. The USMU accomplishes its goals through strong collaborations with federal, state, and local Mexican and U.S. agencies and organizations in the border region and across both countries.

Research Project: DGMQ USMU is requesting assistance with developing and implementing enhanced epidemiologic surveillance programs, COVID 19-related activities, and support public health programs and activities of the Mexico Country Office. The main target for surveillance is binational migrant and other mobile populations in the U.S.-Mexico border region. The fellow will be supported by experienced epidemiology staff at USMU El Paso, Texas, San Diego, California, and Mexico City, Mexico. Activities will include close collaboration with local and state public health departments on both sides of the border.

Learning Objectives: The purpose of this appointment is to provide opportunities for the participant with working knowledge in health communication and health education to collaborate with experienced senior scientists, medical officers and statisticians to gain knowledge and expertise in design, production, evaluation, and training in health education and communication and to provide support that further the goals and objectives of DGMQ.

Anticipated Appointment Start Date: As soon as a qualified candidate is identified.  Start date is flexible and will depend on a variety of factors.
 
Appointment LengthThe appointment will initially be for one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC and is contingent on the availability of funds.
 
Level of ParticipationThe appointment is full-time.
 
Participant StipendThe participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience. 
 
Citizenship RequirementsThis opportunity is available to U.S. citizens and Lawful Permanent Residents (LPR) only.
 
ORISE InformationThis program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. Health insurance can be obtained through ORISE.
 
The successful applicant(s) will be required to comply with Environmental, Safety and Health (ES&H) requirements of the hosting facility, including but not limited to, COVID-19 requirements (e.g. facial covering, physical distancing, testing, vaccination).

Qualifications

The qualified candidate should have received a master's degree in one of the relevant fields (e.g. Public Health, Public Policy, Epidemiology, Health Communication, Health Education, Biostatistics), or be currently pursuing the degree with completion by the end of June, 2022. Degree must have been received within the past five years.

Preferred skills:
  • Experience in conducting epidemiologic and disease surveillance studies, including but not limited to:
    • development of scientific study protocols and or survey design
    • assistance in the coordination of outbreak investigations
    • monitoring and evaluation of outcomes of programs
    • experience in statistical techniques commonly used in epidemiologic evaluations to analyze and interpret study findings
  • Experience in preparing scientific presentations and publication of research findings, including but not limited to:
    • writing of comprehensive statistical and analytic reports for studies
    • collaborative efforts with public health officials, domestically and internationally
    • preparing and delivering scientific presentations
  • Experience in coordinating epidemiologic trainings and meetings, including but not limited to:
    • organizing scientific trainings for state, local and international public health agencies
    • preparation of regional scientific meetings for border, binational, and mobile populations
  • Effective communication and writing skills
  • Ability to work within a team
  • Strong problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work within Spanish-speaking communities
  • Fluency in Spanish

  • Citizenship: LPR or U.S. Citizen
  • Degree: Master's Degree received within the last 60 months or anticipated to be received by 6/30/2022 11:59:00 PM.
