Actress Susan Sarandon has been ripped by law enforcement for “mocking heroes” in an anti-cop Twitter post she shared comparing the officers gathered at slain NYPD Detective Jason Rivera’s funeral to fascists.
The “Thelma & Louise” star posted the image the night before Rivera’s policing partner, Wilbert Mora, was given his own solemn final farewell at his funeral on Wednesday.
“This is what privilege looks like: a wealthy actress, safe in her bubble, mocking heroes & making light of the crisis that cops are battling alongside our communities,” the Police Benevolent Association of the City of New York tweeted Thursday.
“NYC is uniting to stop the violence — @SusanSarandon is living on a different planet.”
The National Fraternal Order of Police slammed Sarandon as a “D-list actor,” calling her remarks “inflammatory.”
“Of all the days for @SusanSarandon to share her true feelings towards police, she picks the day we bury our fallen brother to make such inflammatory & brainless comments,” the order tweeted.
“When you spend more time hating on cops than you do your own career, it’s no wonder why you’re a D-list actor.”
The image that sparked outrage was a tweet by podcaster Danny Haiphong that showed thousands of NYPD cops flooding Manhattan’s 5th Avenue last week to honor their slain colleague, with the phrase: “I’m gonna tell my kids this is what fascism looks like.”
Sarandon shared an apparent screenshot of the original tweet and additional text that read: “So, if all these cops weren’t needed for CRIME that day, doesn’t that mean they aren’t needed ANY day?”
Retired NYPD Detective Angel L Maysonet blasted the actress for her “anti-police rhetoric.”
“There are 35K #NYPD cops in NYC. This is 3 hours. Many off duty, other agencies, representing over 850K sworn LEOs in this country. Shame on you @SusanSarandon 2 young Dominican cops were killed & you spread anti police rhetoric. You’re a disgusting person,” he tweeted.
Sal LaBarbera, a retired Los Angeles homicide detective, tweeted: “You seriously need help. Let’s hope you never need us.”
New York Republican gubernatorial candidate Lee Zeldin also weighed in, tweeting: “Congratulations, Susan Sarandon! You’re now the poster child of an angry, woke, liberal, pro-criminal, anti-law and order jerk. There are other more fitting titles, but it only gets more vulgar from here.”
Sarandon is known for being an outspoken critic of police brutality and has taken part in Black Lives Matter protests.
Her post is just the latest in a string of anti-cop vitriol in the last week.
Brooklyn math teacher Chris Flanigan lost his job over his Instagram post that appeared to encourage violence against cops. He has insisted the message was misconstrued.
And Manhattan actress Jacqueline Guzman was fired after she posted a viral video ranting about street closures related to Rivera’s funeral, saying: “We do not need to shut down most of Lower Manhattan because one cop died for probably doing his job incorrectly.”
