February 2024

NCICU is excited to announce a new collaborative partnership agreement with Sqwire, an organization that has created a financial wellness and literacy platform for students as well as for campus employees.  As introduced to NCICU by two of our Presidents during a recent webinar with CEO, Danijel Velicki and Jeff Stasko, SVP of Product, we learned about Sqwire’s analysis of data and guidance from higher ed faculty, leaders, and students nationally which led Sqwire to create targeted financial wellness content and a learning environment optimized for today’s students.  An Employee Benefit platform is also part of the program and both are being offered at a 25% discount on the first year by virtue of your campus being an NCICU institution.

“EPA Brownfield Grant Opportunities for Higher Education – Incorporation Into Your Master Plan”

July 12, 2023

A Brownfield is a property where the expansion, redevelopment, or reuse may be complicated by the presence or potential presence of a hazardous substance, pollutant, or contaminant. From a campus perspective, a brownfield may be the defunct dry cleaner across the street, the closed gas station on the corner, the adjacent manufacturing facility, or the property gifted to the university.

Grant Types Available to Colleges:

  • Assessment (< $500,000)
  • Cleanup (<$650,000)
  • Revolving Loan Fund (<$1M)
  • Multipurpose (<$800,000)
  • Job Training (< $500,000)

The Brownfields Utilization, Investment, and Local Development Act of 2018 (BUILD ACT) expands program eligibility to non-profit organizations for Assessment grants, increased funding for cleanup grants and remediation activities. A variety of federal, state and local tax incentives and credits allows a brownfield developer to use resources normally spent on taxes for other purposes. Tax increment financing, enterprise zone tax credits, economic development credits, job creation tax credits, and historical preservation credits are all examples of tax incentives that can facilitate brownfields redevelopment.

The Bipartisan Infrastructure Law provides a historic $1.2 B investment into USA EPA Brownfield project grants. Of the grant funding awarded by EPA each year, on average only 1 % typically goes to the higher education sector—not because of bias, but because of lack of interaction and use of the program by the higher education sector.

“A Proactive Approach to Residence Hall Wi-Fi”

January 26, 2023

Gen Z well knows the benefit, convenience, and flexibility that Wi-Fi brings, and their fingers are crossed that campus administrators know it, too. It’s important for campus residence hall and technology decision-makers to partner and look at both the evolving technical usage requirements of residence hall Wi-Fi (multi-device support, personal area networking, IoT) and consider the specific ways incoming students rely on connectivity to live their lives. Only then can your institution design, deploy, and manage a network that delights your on-campus residents while reducing or eliminating student or family-member complaints.

The new lease accounting standard (ASC 842) is effective for all private companies for fiscal years beginning after December 15, 2021. This means that, for most higher education institutions, the long-awaited lease standard will have to be adopted for fiscal 2023 (if you haven’t already). We understand there has been guidance and training on this topic over the last several years. However, with the task of adoption now imminent, FORVIS has developed a helpful presentation that touches on some tips and reminders related to this standard. View the presentation.
